SCHEDULE EXPECTATIONS

  • Part-time hours, primarily afternoons, evenings, and occasional weekends
  • Availability for Youth in Government events, which may include extended days or overnight trips.

What You’ll Be Up To:

  • Lead and support teens participating in YIG—think debates, leadership development, and civic engagement
  • Create a safe, inclusive, and energizing environment where every teen feels heard and valued
  • Mentor youth as they build confidence, leadership skills, and lifelong friendships
  • Help plan and execute meetings, events, and trips (yes, including those exciting YIG conferences!)
  • Partner with staff and volunteers to bring the YIG experience to life

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Senior Manager, OST, the Supervisor, Teen Programs is responsible for the coordination, implementation, and supervision of teen programming with a primary focus on Youth in Government (YIG). This role supports the development of leadership, civic engagement, and personal growth opportunities for youth.

 

The Supervisor creates an inclusive, engaging, and safe environment where teens feel a sense of belonging and are empowered to lead, serve, and grow in alignment with YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Program Implementation & Youth Development

  • Coordinate and deliver high-quality teen programming, with a primary focus on Youth in Government activities, including meetings, events, and experiential learning opportunities.
  • Support youth in developing leadership, public speaking, civic engagement, and teamwork skills.
  • Facilitate teen-led initiatives and encourage youth voice, choice, and leadership in program design and execution.
  • Ensure programming aligns with YMCA youth development principles and promotes a safe, inclusive environment.

Participant Engagement & Support

  • Build positive, supportive relationships with teen participants, fostering a sense of belonging and connection.
  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and behavioral support as needed.
  • Monitor participation, engagement, and retention, and implement strategies to enhance the teen experience.

Program Operations & Safety

  • Ensure compliance with YMCA policies, risk management practices, and safety procedures.
  • Maintain accurate program records, attendance, and required documentation.
  • Support supervision of participants during meetings, events, and off-site activities.
  • Respond appropriately to incidents and emergencies in accordance with YMCA protocols.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Communicate effectively with families, staff, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to support teen program growth and alignment with broader YMCA initiatives.
  • Represent the YMCA positively in community and school-based settings.

Staff & Volunteer Support

  • Provide guidance and support to part-time staff and/or volunteers assisting with teen programs.
  • Assist with onboarding and training of program support staff or volunteers.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work is performed in a variety of settings, including YMCA facilities, schools, community spaces, and off-site program locations
  • Regular interaction with teen participants in both structured and informal program environments
  • Environment is active and dynamic, with varying noise levels and frequent transitions between activities
  • Role includes both program delivery (direct engagement with teens) and administrative responsibilities (planning, communication, coordination)
  • Frequent collaboration with staff, volunteers, schools, and community partners
  • May require travel between program sites and participation in regional or state events (e.g., Youth in Government conferences)
  • Work schedule includes afternoons, evenings, and occasional weekends based on program needs and events

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout program sites for extended periods
  • Ability to actively engage with teens in program activities, including group facilitation and recreational activities
  • Ability to bend, kneel, and lift program supplies and equipment as needed
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25–40 pounds (with or without reasonable accommodation)
  • Ability to travel and participate in extended program days or overnight events (e.g., conferences, retreats)
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment, including computers and phones
  • Visual and auditory ability to monitor program environments and ensure participant safety

Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Experience working with teens (ages ~12–18), preferably in youth development, education, or civic engagement programs
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to engage and motivate teens from diverse backgrounds
  • Strong organizational and communication skills

Preferred

  • Experience with Youth in Government or similar civic/leadership programs
  • Experience facilitating groups or leading youth programs
  • Bilingual/multilingual abilities
