Volunteer Youth Sports Coach - Okmulgee Family YMCA [Not a Paid Position]

Opportunity: Volunteer Sports Coach

Supported By: Sports Coordinator/Director

This opportunity is to develop players positively and become a mentor and leader for your team. Motivate and support youth in building character strengths, skills, and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health, smart life choices, and goals. You will lead practices and games and communicate with your team and the YMCA Sports Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (not a complete list):

• Coordinate with your team via email/phone calls about practices and locations.
• Attend coaches meeting before the season begins (be an active coach)
• Make sure you contact your team at least one week before the 1st practice
• Practice with your team one hour per week, teaching them the rules of the game and the basics of how to play
• Be a mentor to your kids, teaching them the values of sportsmanship, leadership, teamwork, and respect
• Attend weekend games for the entire season
• Play all kids an equal amount of time each game
• Hand out medals and awards (given out by the YMCA) at the appropriate time
• Turn a good experience into a great one, not only for the kids, but for the parents as well
• Communicate with the YMCA about issues, concerns, and questions in a respectful manner
• Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures regarding the prevention of abuse.
• Report any suspected abuse, neglect, or misconduct immediately to the appropriate supervisory staff.
• Attend mandatory training on abuse prevention, including recognizing signs of abuse, and reporting requirements.
• Model and follow the YMCA's four core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in all interactions with players, families, staff, and other coaches.
• Assume all other responsibilities as deemed necessary or assigned.

Requirements:

Required:

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Strong reliability, adaptability, and teamwork skills.
• Commitment to following YMCA policies and maintaining a safe, inclusive environment.

Preferred:

• Minimum of 3 months’ experience working or volunteering with children ages 3–15.
• College coursework or experience in recreation, child development, education, psychology, or a related field.
• Bilingual - English/Spanish
