JOB TITLE: Head Lifeguard
REPORTS TO: Program Director and/or as assigned
FLSA TYPE: Non-Exempt, Hourly
JOB PURPOSE:
The Head Lifeguard provides on-deck leadership, oversees lifeguard staff, and ensures a safe, clean, and well-managed aquatic environment. This role supports the Aquatics Director with supervision, training, program implementation, and daily operational duties. The Head Lifeguard models exemplary guarding practices, maintains strong communication, and enforces all YMCA and state safety standards to protect members, guests, and staff.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (not a complete list):
- Provide on-deck leadership and supervision for lifeguard staff, ensuring consistent vigilance, zone coverage, and adherence to YMCA safety standards
- Maintain all required lifeguard certifications and demonstrate exemplary guarding skills and professional conduct
- Monitor the pool and surrounding areas for hazardous conditions and address or report them immediately
- Conduct and document chemical tests, equipment checks, and facility inspections as assigned
- Assist in scheduling, training, coaching, and supporting lifeguards; model proper scanning, rotations, and emergency readiness
- Enforce all pool rules and facility policies consistently and professionally
- Respond quickly and effectively to emergencies, perform rescues, administer care, and complete incident reports
- Support the Aquatics Director in implementing programs, conducting drills, and maintaining program quality
- Maintain accurate records including attendance, chemical logs, safety checklists, and incident documentation
- Communicate regularly with the Aquatics Director regarding facility conditions, staff performance, and safety concerns
- Maintain cleanliness, organization, and security of the pool deck and related areas
- Attend required staff meetings, in-services, and safety trainingsAdhere to all organizational policies and procedures regarding the prevention of abuse.
- Report any suspected abuse, neglect, or misconduct immediately to the appropriate supervisory staff.
- Attend mandatory training on abuse prevention, including recognizing signs of abuse, and reporting requirements.

Required:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Minimum 2–3 years of lifeguarding experience
- Current YMCA or American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification (will provide upon hire)
- Certified Pool Operator (CPO) Certification or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment
- Prior supervisory or leadership experience
