Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Group Exercise Coordinator, the Group Exercise Instructor leads safe, engaging, and inclusive group exercise classes for members of varying abilities and backgrounds. This role plays a key part in delivering high-quality member experiences while building authentic relationships and fostering a sense of belonging within the YMCA community.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead dynamic and safe group exercise classes that support member health and well-being
- Create a welcoming, inclusive, and motivating environment for all participants
- Build positive relationships by engaging members before, during, and after class
- Adapt instruction to meet diverse fitness levels and individual needs
- Prepare class space and equipment; ensure safe usage at all times
- Maintain accurate class attendance records
- Respond promptly and professionally to member questions, feedback, or concerns
- Collaborate with team members and support overall wellness initiatives
- Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and ongoing professional development
- Promote YMCA programs and connect members to additional resources
- Support additional responsibilities as needed to meet the goals of the YMCA and the wellness department
Qualifications:
- Minimum age of 18
- Current First Aid and CPR/AED certification (e.g., American Red Cross)
- Nationally recognized Group Exercise or Personal Training certification (e.g., ACSM, ACE, NASM, AFAA)
- Multiple certifications or ability to teach a variety of formats preferred
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to build authentic relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds
- Commitment to equity, inclusion, and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
· Ability to actively lead and participate in group exercise classes
· Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting
· Ability to demonstrate exercises and support participants safely
