Under the direction Healthy Living Leadership and in alignment with the Christian mission of the YMCA, the Tier 2 Personal Trainer delivers personalized, evidence-based fitness training to individuals and small groups. Trainers at this level apply advanced training knowledge, monitor progress, and support participants in achieving sustainable health outcomes. Tier 2 Trainers also serve as role models in promoting wellness services and demonstrating excellence in service delivery.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide customized fitness training for clients based on personal assessments and health goals (minimum of 5 sessions/week).
  • Complete 4–8 hours of fitness floor time weekly during the first 90 days to support member engagement and YMCA wellness integration.
  • Create, implement, and adapt safe and effective cardiovascular, resistance, and flexibility programming for diverse populations.
  • Maintain accurate client documentation and perform administrative tasks related to participation and progress tracking.
  • Educate clients on safe movement, proper use of equipment, and long-term behavior change strategies.
  • Promote personal training services and build strong member relationships through active engagement and outreach.
  • Stay current with exercise science and health trends through continuing education, certifications, and YMCA professional development.
  • Attend team meetings, training sessions, and contribute to branch initiatives such as Annual Giving Campaigns.
  • Follow YMCA guidelines on safety, uniform appearance, and member service standards.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and integrity through personal wellness, punctuality, and a commitment to excellence.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Must hold a nationally recognized Personal Training certification (e.g., ACE, NASM, ACSM, NSCA).
  • Minimum of three (3) years of personal training experience, averaging at least 5 hours/week, or a 4-year degree in a health-related field, or equivalent combination of advanced education and experience.
  • Completion of all required YMCA of Greater Charlotte trainings by designated deadlines.
  • Strong communication, coaching, and interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and motivate others.
  • Self-starter with demonstrated reliability, initiative, and passion for helping people achieve health goals.
  • Positive and supportive demeanor with strong customer service skills.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (Outlook, Word, Excel) and willingness to learn YMCA-specific systems.
  • Flexible schedule availability including evenings and weekends.

 

Working Conditions

  • Ability to work irregular hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, kneel, bend, and perform dynamic movements for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment or assist clients weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Visual and auditory acuity to respond swiftly and safely in emergency situations.
  • Ability to physically “spot” clients and demonstrate proper exercise form.
  • Exposure to bodily fluids, exercise equipment, and communicable diseases.
  • Extended periods of computer or tablet use for scheduling and documentation purposes.
