The YMCA Y Scholars Program is hiring Afterschool Group Tutors to provide academic support and guided learning experiences for middle school students during afterschool hours. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy working closely with students, reinforcing classroom learning, and helping youth build strong study habits in a supportive group setting.

Role Summary
Start Date: Immediate
End Date: June 2026 (summer work may be available)
Compensation: $26/hour - part-time, non-exempt
Schedule: Minimum 2 days/week, Monday to Friday
Daily Hours: Typically 2:00 PM–4:00 PM
Weekly Hours: Approximately 4–10 hours
Pay Rate: Up to $26/hour (part-time, non-exempt)
Sites: DeJean Middle School or Soskin Middle School

What You’ll Do
As an Afterschool Group Tutor, you will support students’ academic growth while helping create a calm, focused, and encouraging learning environment. Responsibilities include:
- Providing small-group academic support to 15–20 middle school students
- Assisting students with homework, assignments, and skill-building activities
- Reinforcing foundational skills in literacy, math, organization, and study habits
- Encouraging student participation, effort, and perseverance
- Creating a welcoming, inclusive space where students feel supported and capable
- Taking accurate daily attendance and monitoring engagement
- Collaborating with site staff to align academic support with program

- Serving as a consistent mentor and positive adult presence
- Supporting additional program needs as assigned
What We’re Looking For
Minimum Requirements
- 18 years of age or older
- 48 completed college units or passing score on the Instructional Aide Exam
- (We will support you if you need to take the exam.)
- Ability to clear DOJ/FBI background checks
- CPR, First Aid, and AED certification within 30 days of hire
- (Provided at no cost to you.)
Strong Candidates Will Also:
- Have experience in tutoring, especially in different subjects
- Enjoy working with middle school students in group settings
- Communicate clearly and work well with a team
- Be reliable, organized, and consistent
- Have patience and a supportive teaching style
- Feel comfortable encouraging students who may struggle academically
- Value feedback, growth, and continuous learning

- Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to supervise program activities
