Location: Goodfellow AFB, TX (RE Building, Bldg. 136 / Taylor Chapel, Bldg. 164)

Reports To: Catholic Chaplain, Goodfellow AFB

Hours: Part-time, approx. 8 hours/week

  • Sundays: 4 hours (10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.)
  • Monday–Friday: 4 hours total (schedule flexible with Chaplain approval)

Position Summary

The Catholic Religious Education (RE) Coordinator supports the Catholic Chaplain in planning, developing, and administering a comprehensive Catholic Religious Education program at Goodfellow AFB, consistent with the teachings of the Second Vatican Council and the American Conference of Catholic Bishops. This role serves the children, families, and adults of the Goodfellow Catholic Community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with the Catholic Chaplain to develop RE programs, goals, policies, and procedures, including:
  • Catechist training and recruitment
  • Sacramental preparation (First Reconciliation, First Communion, Confirmation)
  • OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation of Adults) program oversight
  • Parent and teacher training
  • Seasonal programs (e.g., Christmas Pageant, Stations of the Cross)
  • Develop the annual RE calendar and CTOF budget for Chaplain approval at the July Pastoral Council meeting
  • Handle administrative start-up tasks for the school year (facility reservations, catechist recruitment, publicity)
  • Conduct at least one catechist training session before the school year and one per quarter during the school year
  • Manage facility and material fund requests through the Catholic Chaplain
  • Attend monthly staff meetings and Catholic Advisory Council (CAC) meetings (non-voting)
  • Maintain RE materials inventory and order curriculum/supplies each quarter
  • Track attendance and produce monthly/quarterly metrics for the Chaplain and Parish Coordinator
  • Plan volunteer recognition and appreciation events
  • Collect background-check consent documentation for volunteers with access to minors
  • Monitor programs for behavioral issues and document any disciplinary incidents
  • Maintain and update the RE Coordinator continuity file
  • Safeguard government property, equipment, and facility keys/access codes

Required Qualifications

  • Faith commitment: Must be an active, practicing Roman Catholic in good standing with the Church, regularly attending Sunday Mass at the Goodfellow AFB Chapel; demonstrated familiarity with and support of Vatican II and USCCB teachings
  • Experience/Education (one of the following):
  • Minimum 6 months working in a Roman Catholic parish office with involvement in or leadership of a Catholic RE program, or
  • Minimum 15 college credit hours in religious sciences/theology from a Roman Catholic institution, or
  • Bachelor's degree in Catholic theology or a related religious science field, or equivalent
  • Certification: Must be a Certified Catechist through the Archdiocese of the Military Services (AMS)
  • Training: Must complete AMS Child and Youth Protection Training within the first month of the contract
  • References: Two (2) letters of recommendation from Roman Catholic pastors or priests attesting to character and performance, submitted prior to starting work
  • Skills: Basic word-processing proficiency; comfortable working in a pluralistic environment alongside chaplains, staff, contractors, and volunteers
  • Presentation: Professional appearance and demeanor appropriate for office and worship settings
  • Must be able to pass a background check per DoDI 1402.05 (background checks on individuals in DoD child care services programs)
  • Reliable personal transportation (contractor-furnished)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience delivering RE services in a military chapel setting

Personal Performance & Substitution

  • The RE Coordinator is expected to personally perform the services under this role
  • If unavailable, the Coordinator may arrange for a substitute of equal or higher proficiency, subject to approval by the Catholic Chaplain
  • Except in emergencies, the Chaplain must be notified at least fourteen (14) days in advance of any planned substitution
  • The Chaplain reserves the right to decline a proposed substitute if determined to be unqualified

Pre-Placement Assessment

  • Before being placed in the role, candidates will undergo an assessment conducted by the Catholic Chaplain and/or a member of the Chapel Staff to confirm they meet all contract requirements
  • Candidates must bring a resume detailing job experience and qualifications to this assessment

Background Check Rights

  • Authorized recipients of background check results are limited to the NCOIC for Religious Affairs and the Wing Chaplain
  • The Coordinator has the right to obtain a copy of their background check report from the NCOIC for Religious Affairs and may challenge the accuracy of the report with the reporting agency

Coordination & Security Compliance

  • All support requirements (facilities, funding, materials) must be coordinated through the Contracting Officer or Contracting Officer Representative (COR)
  • The Coordinator must comply with OPSEC (Operations Security) requirements, including protecting controlled unclassified information and refraining from disclosing any structured process related to critical information, threat analysis, or risk assessments, per DAFI 10-701

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed on Goodfellow AFB; installation access, vehicle passes, and (if applicable) CAC credentialing are required
  • Government furnishes office space, equipment, and supplies necessary for the role
  • May use Chapel-owned audio/visual equipment on-site (removal requires written Wing Chaplain authorization)
  • Contractor is responsible for opening/closing/securing the facility per local Operating Instructions during assigned hours

Pay: $20.00 - $23.00 per hour
