About the Role
The Goodfellow AFB Catholic Community is seeking a Catholic Director of Music to provide musical direction and accompaniment for weekend Masses, Holy Days, Vigils, and all related rehearsals. This is a contract position supporting the Air Force Chapel and working closely with the Catholic Chaplain and Pastoral Coordinator.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as First Cantor and Accompanist, leading the congregation in song at all weekend and Holy Day liturgies
- Direct, recruit, and train the parish choir through a minimum of two weekly rehearsals (one Sunday morning, one weekday evening)
- Consult weekly with the Catholic Chaplain (or Auxiliary Priest) on musical selections and liturgical planning
- Prepare a written seasonal liturgical music plan (Advent/Christmas, Lent/Easter, Ordinary Time), selecting music at least four weeks in advance
- Develop and present an annual music program budget
- Perform for special or emergency liturgies (e.g., funerals) as requested
- Recruit new choir members on an ongoing basis and maintain positive working relationships with choir and chapel staff
- Ensure all music use complies with CCLI (Christian Copyright Licensing International) guidelines
- Maintain security of chapel facilities and any government-issued keys/access credentials
Qualifications
- College degree in music, or completed college-level music coursework
- Proficient sight-reader; skilled in voice, organ, and piano
- Minimum 6 months of experience as a choir director, cantor, and accompanist in a Catholic parish setting
- Strong knowledge of Catholic liturgical music traditions — traditional, contemporary, and folk/praise styles
- Familiarity with the Roman Catholic Mass, liturgical seasons, and the role of music in worship
- Ability to collaborate and sight-read with other musicians (guitar, drums, trumpet, etc.)
- Comfortable working in a pluralistic, team-based environment alongside chaplains, staff, and volunteers
- Two letters of recommendation from Roman Catholic pastors or priests attesting to performance and moral character
- Must pass a background check (per DoDI 1402.5)
Schedule
- Sundays: 3 hours (8:00 AM – 11:00 AM) at the Goodfellow AFB Chapel
- Monday–Saturday: approximately 4 additional hours per week
- Schedule may be adjusted to fit chapel needs, not to exceed the total weekly hours above
Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
