Position Overview

The Surgical Technologist is an integral member of the surgical team, providing direct support before, during, and after surgical procedures. This role is responsible for preparing operating rooms, maintaining sterile fields, anticipating surgeons' needs, handling surgical instrumentation, and supporting patient safety throughout the operative process. The Surgical Technologist may also assist with sterilization, inventory management, and serve as a surgical assistant as appropriate. Working closely with surgeons, nurses, anesthesia providers, and support staff, this position plays a critical role in delivering efficient, high-quality patient care.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Surgical Procedure Support

  • Prepare operating rooms for surgical procedures
  • Perform scrub technologist and surgical assistant functions according to AORN standards
  • Assist surgeons during procedures by passing instruments, supplies, and equipment
  • Anticipate the needs of surgeons and surgical team members, including instrumentation, sutures, sponges, suction, and electrosurgical equipment
  • Observe patients during procedures and assist with equipment and supplies needed to support optimal outcomes
  • Assist as the surgeon's second assistant when appropriate and qualified
  • Handle and process surgical specimens according to Surgery Center policies

 

Case Preparation & Surgical Readiness

  • Prepare for scheduled procedures by reviewing surgeon preference cards and pulling cases
  • Ensure all required instruments, equipment, implants, and supplies are available before procedures
  • Label cases accurately and prepare "needs lists" for missing items
  • Verify adequate supplies are available for scheduled procedures
  • Assist with maintaining efficient surgical workflow and room turnover

 

Sterile Processing & Instrument Care

  • Maintain sterile fields throughout surgical procedures
  • Sterilize instruments and equipment according to established protocols
  • Clean, disinfect, and prepare instruments, equipment, and supplies for sterilization
  • Demonstrate proper handling, care, and storage of delicate instrumentation
  • Operate sterilization and processing equipment, including:
    • Ultrasonic cleaners
    • Washer-disinfectors
    • Steris systems
    • Autoclaves
    • Ensure proper settings and procedures are followed during instrument processing

 

Inventory & Supply Management

  • Assist with inventory control and supply stocking activities
  • Monitor and support cost containment initiatives
  • Ensure surgical supplies remain organized, available, and appropriately stocked
  • Support efficient utilization of resources throughout the department

 

Teamwork & Collaboration

  • Assist visitors, physicians, and staff while demonstrating excellent guest relations
  • Serve as a resource to other team members
  • Assist with orientation and training of new employees, students, and approved program participants
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings, communication groups, educational opportunities, and in-service programs
  • Work in a spirit of teamwork and trust while maintaining professional boundaries
  • Demonstrate respectful behavior toward patients, families, physicians, and co-workers at all times

 

Organization & Flexibility

  • Prioritize responsibilities to support optimal patient care and efficient resource utilization
  • Demonstrate flexibility to meet the changing needs of the Surgery Center and clinical departments
  • Function effectively during emergencies
  • May assist in other roles, including Sterile Processing, Materials, Surgical Technologist Assistant (STA), and Patient Care Technician functions as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

 

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

  • Normal hospital environment with exposure to chemical odors, cleaning solvents, and other hazardous materials
  • Exposure to possible injury when working with electrical equipment and lasers, which requires care and following proper safety procedures

 

Sedentary                Primarily sitting/lifting 10 lbs maximum

Light                       Lifting 20 lbs maximum with frequent lifting/carrying up to 10 lbs

Medium      X         Lifting 50 lbs maximum with frequent lifting/carrying up to 20 lbs

Heavy                     Lifting 100 lbs maximum with frequent lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs

Very Heavy             Lifting over 100 lbs with frequent lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs

 

 

 

Bloodborne Pathogens:

Based on the OSHA guidelines for protection against occupational exposure to Hepatitis and HIV, this position is described as Category I. This means the position has exposure to blood and other body fluids. Policies are in place for Universal Precautions, exposure risk identification, and appropriate barrier protection.

Qualifications:

Education, Experience, licensure/certification requirements:

  • Certificate or Associate Degree from an accredited Surgical Technology program
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential preferred
  • Current CPR certification required
  • Operating Room experience required

Salary : $29 - $41
