Reporting to the Grandview Assistant Dean, the Instruction & Classroom Support Technician 1 provides instructional and technical support on the Grandview Campus for both the Workforce Education Division and Arts and Sciences Division. Primary areas of support include Chemistry and Biology laboratories as well as Agriculture and Winery labs.

This is a cyclic (10 months/year), 40 hours per week, classified position with leave without pay periods occurring July-August of each year. Starting salary is $3,495 per month for 40 hours per week, with periodic increments up to $4,653.

The technician performs a variety of laboratory and instructional support duties that require knowledge of laboratory procedures, materials, and equipment. Duties include setting out lab material according to procedures, cleaning up and maintaining lab equipment and materials, including washing glassware, and mixing chemicals accurately. The technician will collaborate with faculty, administrators, and staff to ensure safe, efficient, and effective learning environments. Duties are performed in office, laboratory, and field environments, with occasional evening or weekend work and travel between the Yakima and Grandview campuses. Some lifting (up to 50 lbs.) is required.
  • Set up, operate, maintain, and close labs, equipment, and chemicals according to established procedures.
  • Maintain, test, calibrate, and perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on laboratory and field equipment.
  • Operate and maintain instructional laboratories, providing hands-on training for students and new faculty as needed.
  • Order and maintain live or preserved plants and related instructional materials.
  • Coordinate hazardous waste disposal and maintain current Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Assist students in agricultural science and science laboratory courses by reinforcing techniques and practical applications introduced by instructors.
  • Collaborate with instructors to plan laboratory activities and determine required materials and equipment.
  • Provide professional and technical support involving the use of specialized knowledge, equipment, and techniques.
  • Monitor, launder, stock, and replace personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Assist in developing and enforcing safe laboratory procedures.
  • Maintain records, inventories, and logs of equipment, supplies, and purchases.
  • Prepare and submit documentation for purchasing department supplies and maintain adequate stock levels.
  • Provide input on supply and equipment needs during budget preparation.
  • Work independently on assigned projects with minimal supervision.
  • May facilitate laboratory portions of selected classes.
  • Conduct routine juice and wine analysis.
  • Participate in student recruitment events, program advertisement and community development for the agriculture department.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Six months to two years of full-time experience/training in the appropriate discipline OR
  • Equivalent education/experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with office technology and software, including Microsoft Suite.
  • Knowledge of proper safety protocols for handling lab chemicals and disposing of them properly.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bilingual/Biliterate: English/Spanish.
  • Wine industry work experience.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in agriculture science, viticulture, enology or related discipline(s) from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • Forklift certification.
ABILITY TO:
  • Obtain and maintain CPR/AED/First Aid certification within thirty (30) days of hire.
  • Sustain focus for extended periods, manage multiple interruptions, and effectively multitask.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. routinely and work in laboratory and field environments
  • Communicate knowledge and skills with patience and professionalism, both orally and in writing, to students representing a wide range of ages, abilities, educational levels, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Collaborate effectively with diverse faculty, staff, students, public, and community partners to foster a positive work environment.
  • Work independently, manage priorities, and meet established deadlines.
  • Demonstrate openness, inclusivity, and respect for multicultural perspectives, as well as the ability to engage successfully with individuals from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) and related software applications.
  • Proper safety protocols for handling, storing, and disposing of laboratory chemicals.
  • Regulations and best practices for laboratory safety, maintenance, and instructional support.
QUALITY OF WORK:
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe learning environments across laboratories and clinic spaces.
  • Inspect lab areas regularly to ensure compliance with safety standards.
QUANTITY OF WORK:
  • Prepare demonstrations and laboratory aids as requested by instructors.
  • Work with vendors and suppliers to identify, order, and maintain instruments, materials, and equipment.
