Yakima Valley College is accepting applications for an innovative and collaborative Assistant Dean of Allied Dental Education Programs, who is committed to students and their success. This is a full-time (12 month), administrative position, which includes a full state benefits package. This position is in person, on campus M-F and occasional evenings and weekends as needed for program and clinic operations and support. In addition, this role supervises both faculty and staff positions.


Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Workforce and Economic Development, the Assistant Dean of Allied Dental Education Programs provides administrative leadership for the Bachelor of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene Program, Dental Hygiene Clinic, and any additional Dental related programs. As a team member in the Workforce Education Division, this position leads the implementation of policies and procedures designed to ensure compliance with federal, state, and accrediting requirements for clinic operation and academic programming. This individual will demonstrate dedication to excellence in leadership and a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness.


This position’s primary authority and responsibility is to provide supervision of Allied Dental Education programs through accomplishing the following: policy/procedure management, program planning, accreditation, faculty/staff development, curriculum delivery, planning for facilities and equipment, departmental operations, grant management, community engagement, and responsiveness to students following college policies and procedures. This includes management of the student learning clinic operations. The Assistant Dean must work effectively with administration, faculty, staff, students, patients, external community members, and State and national agencies regarding the operation of all Allied Dental Education Programs.DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide leadership to maintain accreditation from the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and ensure compliance with all CODA requirements for program approval. 
  • Comply with the following guidelines: (a) college policies and procedures, (b) state administrative code, (c) standards of the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), and (d) standards set forth by all accrediting and approval agencies for Dental Hygiene or Dental Assistant certification in Washington State. 
  • Develop and recommend overall objectives, plans, and procedures for Allied Dental Education Programs, along with oversight of the instructional and clinical facilities. This includes following records management procedures for the department. 
  • Ensure program assessments are completed in a timely manner, and data/research is utilized to guide best practices in Allied Dental Programs. 
  • Serve as part of the student appeal process for programs served.
  • Maintain quality assurance, safety standards, and FERPA and HIPPA compliance requirements, and prepare for on-site CODA accrediting site visits. 
  • Prepare quarterly and annual reports, including extensive self-study reports.
  • Prepare a preliminary budget for the program and clinic, incorporating input from faculty and staff. Propose annual budget to the AVP- Workforce & Economic Development, manage and approve program expenditures through effective budget management, and utilize college processes to procure necessary supplies, materials, and equipment. 
  • Lead the recruitment process for all faculty and staff in the Allied Dental Education Programs. Complete faculty and staff performance evaluations in a timely manner.
  • Participate in tenure committees and manage all disciplinary matters following college policies and procedures and collective bargaining agreements. 
  • Plan and recommend annual teaching assignments within established guidelines. 
  • Manage and coordinate the Allied Dental Educations Programs Advisory Committee, ensure a minimum number of meetings are held each year, with additional meetings as needed. Follow through with applicable reporting and recruit new members, as necessary. 
  • Collaborate with program faculty to form, develop, evaluate, and revise courses, as well as to enhance the overall curriculum within Dental programs. Attend and support faculty when presenting proposed curricular changes to curriculum committee.
  • Coordinate, evaluate, and participate in establishing admission criteria and procedures, as well as criteria for student promotion and retention.
  • Conduct program recruitment through information sessions and prepare admissions materials to facilitate the annual application process in compliance with the accrediting agency's requirements. Review applications with program faculty to determine eligibility. 
  • Ensure the accuracy and currency of program web pages, faculty and student handbooks, applicable policies and procedures, as well as any promotional or public relations materials, and reissue them as needed. 
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with colleagues across the campus.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community partners related to the Dental Programs.
  • Assess, initiate, and promote professional development as well as any required training for department faculty and staff. 
  • Seek available college offerings and in-service training when possible.
  • Seek funding and/or equipment from external resources as needed, following YVC policies and procedures.
  • Serve as the representative in relevant community partner associations.
  • Participate in college committees as appropriate and/or assigned. 
  • Review the college catalog annually with faculty to make necessary updates.
  • Collaborate with the Library Director to ensure that Allied Dental Education program materials are up to date.
  • Advise current and prospective Allied Dental Education program students as needed during off contract time for faculty.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree in Dental Hygiene, Public Health or Higher Education from a regionally accredited college or university AND a Dental Hygienist with current license to practice in Washington State.
  • OR a dentist who is a graduate of a program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.
  • Three (3) years of clinical practice as a dental hygienist or working with a dental hygienist (Dentist).
  • Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent teaching experience at a community college or university.
  • Two (2) years of professional supervisory experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically experience creating and editing documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. Adobe PDF experience required. Previous success learning new computer software programs/platforms required.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail required as well as previous experience maintaining accurate records, managing multiple tasks, and planning and organizing work to meet changing priorities and deadlines.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience in community college administration.
  • Experience supervising faculty and staff.
  • Experience analyzing business processes and workflows extensively.
  • Experience developing instructional and procedural documentation and presentations.
  • Administrative, instructional, and professional experience in clinical practice as a dental hygienist or working with a dental hygienist (Dentist).
  • Knowledge and experience with curriculum development and outcomes-based assessment.
  • Experience managing financial resources in an institutional environment.
  • Experience working with disadvantaged, at-risk, and multicultural populations.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Perform basic gross motor movements to participate in activities with students and occasionally demonstrate procedures in a clinical setting.
  • Maintain sufficient visual acuity to observe students and faculty performing dental practices.
  • Engage in frequent oral, written, and auditory communication to support instruction, program operations, and faculty collaboration.
  • Perform repetitive hand and wrist motions as needed for administrative tasks or clinical demonstrations.
  • Manage physical demands, including prolonged periods of sitting or standing and occasional lifting of up to 25 lbs.
