We are seeking an experienced IEC 61850 Engineer to support consulting and engineering projects within the electric power industry. This role will focus on IEC 61850 system design, digital substations, protection and control, testing, standards development, and field implementation. The successful candidate will work directly with utility clients and technical teams to develop practical solutions, provide technical guidance, and support the delivery of complex power system projects. The position offers the opportunity to contribute as either a technical team member or project/team leader, depending on experience.
Key Responsibilities
Technical & Project Delivery
- Lead and support projects involving IEC 61850 protection and control applications.
- Develop IEC 61850 conceptual designs, engineering standards, and implementation strategies.
- Support validation and testing of IEC 61850 systems, including Real-Time Digital Simulation (RTDS) and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing.
- Provide technical support during system commissioning, testing, and field deployment.
- Work collaboratively with engineers and technical specialists across related power system disciplines.
- Develop technical reports, engineering documentation, and project deliverables.
- Identify technical challenges and develop practical, client-focused solutions.
Industry & Technical Leadership
- Maintain current knowledge of IEC 61850, protection and control technologies, and digital substation developments.
- Participate in relevant technical forums, standards activities, and industry organizations.
- Contribute to technical papers, presentations, and industry publications.
- Support the development and expansion of technical capabilities within the practice.
- Develop strong relationships across the utility and power systems community.
Qualifications
- Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- 8 years of experience working with electrical power systems, preferably within the utility or consulting environment.
- Demonstrated technical leadership through significant projects, industry involvement, technical contributions, or similar experience.
Required Skills
In-depth knowledge of IEC 61850, including:
- System architecture
- Protection and control applications
- Engineering and configuration
- Testing and validation
- Field deployment
Preferred Skills
- Advanced degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline.
- Active participation in IEEE or other relevant industry organizations.
- Experience contributing to industry standards, technical publications, or conference presentations.
- Experience leading technical projects or multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Previous consulting or client-facing experience within the electric utility sector.
