Controller – Construction Industry

As we continue to scale across divisions, our priority is building dependable accounting operations that support the field, leadership, and ownership with clean, timely financial data.
We are seeking a hands-on Construction Controller who thrives in the details, manages execution, and ensures accounting operations run smoothly and predictably. This role partners closely with the CFO and Office Manager to manage day-to-day accounting and financial administration for the company.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Accounting & Close Execution
- Oversee the full-cycle accounting function, including GL, AP, AR, payroll, job costing, fixed assets, and equipment
- Partner with the Senior Accountant to manage and shorten the monthly close cycle
- Review journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and financial statements
- Ensure timely, accurate, and repeatable month-end and year-end closes
- Step in directly to resolve accounting issues, bottlenecks, or errors
Construction Accounting & Job Costing
- Review and validate job costing accuracy across all projects and divisions
- Oversee WIP schedules, percent complete calculations, retainage, and change orders
- Ensure project financials align with operational progress
- Support CFO needs for bonding, banking, and forecasting with reliable data
- Monitor project margins and flag issues early
AP, AR, and Payroll Oversight
- Oversee AP and AR leads to ensure workflow discipline, compliance, and timeliness
- Review AR aging, collections status, and customer exposure reporting
- Ensure AP accuracy, lien compliance, and vendor controls
- Oversee payroll accounting, tax filings, and related reconciliations
Systems, Controls & Process Discipline
- Maintain accounting policies, internal controls, and SOP adherence
- Ensure data integrity within the Foundation ERP and related systems
- Improve close efficiency, reporting consistency, and documentation
- Eliminate recurring issues through process improvements and hands-on follow-up
Team Leadership & Coordination
- Manage and support accounting leads and senior accounting staff
- Set expectations, deadlines, and quality standards across the accounting team
- Coach team members through review, feedback, and direct involvement
- Partner closely with the Office Manager to align accounting and financial administration
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- CPA preferred, or equivalent construction accounting experience
- 5 to 10 years of experience in construction or job-costed accounting environments
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, job costing, WIP, and percentage-of-completion accounting
- Experience with construction accounting systems such as Foundation, Viewpoint, Sage, or similar
- Detail-oriented, execution-focused, and comfortable working hands-on
- Strong communication and team leadership skills
