Position Overview

Würth Wood Group is seeking a Color Lab Technician (Tint Specialist) to join our growing team in Elkridge, MD. This position is responsible for producing accurate custom color matches and maintaining consistency across stains, coatings, and finishes for customers in the custom cabinetry and architectural millwork industries.

We are open to candidates who are newer to professional color matching, including those who have gained relevant tinting or paint-matching experience in retail paint, hardware, or home improvement environments. More important than years of experience is a strong eye for color, attention to detail, willingness to learn, and the ability to consistently produce accurate results.

The Tint Specialist will work alongside an experienced team member and receive ongoing training in color development, finishing products, customer applications, and troubleshooting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce approximately 3–6 custom color matches per day, along with required remixes and adjustments.
  • Mix and match stains, lacquers, and other finishing products to customer specifications.
  • Maintain consistent color accuracy across repeat orders and custom formulations.
  • Use a Corob tint dispensing system to dispense products and record formulations.
  • Utilize a spectrophotometer when appropriate to assist with color development and matching.
  • Mix and prepare both 1-gallon and 5-gallon batches.
  • Work with a variety of water-based and solvent-based finishing products, including pre-catalyzed and post-catalyzed lacquers, polyurethane products, and other professional wood coatings.
  • Work with finishing product lines including Sayerlack and M.L. Campbell.
  • Evaluate color matches visually and make manual adjustments when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate records of formulas, adjustments, remixes, and completed orders.
  • Process and track orders and inventory using Agility/DMSI.
  • Maintain tinting equipment and keep the color lab clean, organized, and operating efficiently.
  • Partner with Operations, Sales, and other team members to resolve color or product-related issues.
  • As product knowledge develops, assist customers by phone, email, or in person with color and finishing questions.
  • Follow all company safety, quality, and product-handling procedures.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience with paint tinting, color matching, stains, coatings, or finishing products is preferred but not required.
  • Candidates with color-matching or paint-department experience from home improvement, hardware, paint, coatings, or similar retail environments are encouraged to apply.
  • Ability to distinguish subtle differences in color, tone, shade, and finish.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing consistent results.
  • Comfortable learning tint-dispensing equipment, spectrophotometer technology, and color formulation processes.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to learn order-processing and inventory systems.
  • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple custom matches and remixes while maintaining accuracy.
  • Dependable, self-directed, and comfortable working in a hands-on production environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to learn professional wood-finishing products and applications.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with customers and internal teams as needed.

Training & Development

New hires can expect a structured introduction to the business and color lab, including:

  • 1–2 days of general company onboarding.
  • Approximately 3–5 days working within Operations to learn branch processes and workflow.
  • 1–2 days initially shadowing the color-mixing process.
  • Ongoing hands-on training in color development, product knowledge, finishing applications, and common customer challenges.

As knowledge and experience develop, the position offers opportunities to take on greater responsibility, including direct customer interaction and advanced color troubleshooting.

What Success Looks Like

New Tint Specialists are provided approximately 3–6 months to learn the role and develop proficiency. Success in the position is primarily measured by:

  • Color match accuracy and consistency: Custom colors should match customer specifications accurately and consistently.
  • Customer returns and credits: Incorrect color matches can result in customers returning products or requesting credits. Fewer tint-related returns and credits mean fewer errors and are a key measure of success in this role.
  • Customer feedback: Consistently producing accurate matches that meet customer expectations.
  • Quality and volume: Successfully handling the branch's volume of custom matches and remixes without sacrificing accuracy.

The Elkridge branch primarily serves custom cabinet shops and architectural millwork shops that depend on accurate, repeatable professional finishing solutions.
