The Staff Engineer provides professional engineering support for the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of electric transmission, distribution, and substation systems. This role applies established engineering principles and cooperative standards to ensure system reliability, safety, regulatory compliance, and cost-effective service delivery to Members.
Key Responsibilities
- Support engineering planning, analysis, and design for overhead, underground, transmission, distribution, and substation facilities.
- Assist in developing long-range plans, construction work plans, and system studies.
- Perform system modeling, including load flow, voltage analysis, and protection coordination using approved engineering tools.
- Support protective device coordination (fusing, relaying, sectionalizing, and SCADA integration).
- Review engineering designs and construction activities for compliance with internal standards, RUS requirements, NESC, and applicable regulations.
- Provide technical support to Operations during routine work, outages, and emergency restoration efforts.
- Conduct field inspections to ensure adherence to approved designs and safety standards.
- Assist with engineering budgets, capital project documentation, and cost tracking.
- Maintain and validate the distribution system model, including annual updates and documentation.
- Maintain accurate engineering records, maps, drawings, and system documentation.
- Support a culture of safety, compliance, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
- Provide on-call supervisory support for SCADA systems.
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering
- Professional Engineer (PE) preferred
- Experience in electric utility engineering (distribution, transmission, or substations)
- Familiarity with system modeling and engineering software tools
- Knowledge of SCADA systems and protective device coordination
- Strong analytical, communication, and project management skills
