The Wright County Independent is looking for a part-time local reporter to help us tell the stories of Wright County and the people who call it home.
For this position, being local matters.
We are specifically looking for someone who lives in Wright County or very close to the area and is familiar with communities such as Clarion, Belmond, Eagle Grove and the surrounding area.
This reporter will help cover the local news that matters most to our readers — city government, schools, businesses, community events, agriculture, human-interest stories and the people and organizations making a difference throughout Wright County.
What You’ll Do
- Write local news and feature stories for our print and digital publications
- Cover city councils, school boards and other local government
- Report on local schools, businesses and community organizations
- Attend community events and meetings
- Interview residents, business owners and community leaders
- Take photos to accompany stories
- Find interesting stories about the people and places of Wright County
- Help us make sure our communities continue to have strong, dependable local news coverage
Who We’re Looking For
Previous newspaper or journalism experience is a plus, but it is not required.
We are willing to teach the right candidate.
More importantly, we want someone who is curious, dependable, comfortable talking with people and genuinely interested in Wright County and local news. Strong writing and communication skills are important, along with the ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
Because this is a local reporting position, candidates must live in Wright County or within a reasonable driving distance of the communities we cover.
This is a part-time position with flexibility in scheduling and the opportunity to become an important part of one of the area’s leading community newspapers.
