Position Announcement

Our advising team is currently very cohesive, collaborative, and supportive, and we are seeking a responsible, dependable colleague who works well with others and contributes positively to a strong team culture.

While the person in this position will be advising math majors, they do not need to have a degree in math; rather, they need an appreciation for the value of mathematics and its role in student success across disciplines.

In addition to advising duties, this position will support students, staff, and campus partners by answering math-related questions and communicating information clearly and accessibly. This role also includes presenting math-related information in group settings, such as meetings, training sessions, or informational sessions.

Summary Of Responsibilities

  • Guiding/Planning: Counsel students in developing meaningful educational plans aligned with their educational, career, and life goals. Advise students on academic requirements, course selection, and university policies. Demonstrate, as needed, the use of technology platforms required for degree planning and registration. Provide guidance related to placement testing and transfer credit. Educate students on success strategies and support services provided by the university. Contribute insight to the development of policies, procedures, and priorities of departments and the institution, particularly those related to student degree completion. Serve as an advocate to bridge department goals and student success. Raise awareness of gaps in institutional resources and services for students.
  • Caseload Management: Manage and support a student caseload using holistic advising approaches, proactive outreach, and data-informed strategy. Maintain student advisement records. Within the framework of the student success platforms, Banner, DegreeWorks, Cadence, Civitas, etc., audit student records for retention and graduation requirements. Assess student performance and progression toward graduation and refer students to appropriate support services as needed. Recognize student barrier patterns to inform and recommend department decisions. Develop advanced expertise in advising certain student populations, e.g., exploratory, pre-professional, readmitted, adult, transfer, or a specific discipline/major. Track progress toward key performance indicators.
  • Technology: Obtain advanced proficiency and lead implementation of new technology, such as predictive analytics, student communication, records management, and degree progress tools. Monitor student risk trends over time, track data on student performance and progress toward graduation, and proactively reach out to students who need intervention. Provide additional/refresher training on technology/software applications to colleagues as needed.
  • Certification/Professional Development/Training: Achieve initial UVU advisor certification within one year of employment and maintain continued UVU advisor certification status as required. Adapt and apply current scholarship and related knowledge to advising practice and associated work activities. Remain current on department curriculum, degree-related opportunities, internships, graduate school, careers, etc., university policy, campus resources, and technology upgrades. Assist the director in designing and implementing the center-specific professional development/training program. Mentor Advisor Meets regularly with assigned mentees, shares best practices, provides templates, answers questions, etc., and models the values of the advising profession.
  • Additional Duties: Participate in department, division, and institutional goals and projects. Coordinate academic issues with faculty and staff. Review the new curriculum as needed. Assist in the planning and delivery of academic advising programs/services. Complete other duties as assigned.

Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor’s degree plus four years of related experience totaling eight years; OR a master’s degree and two years of related experience totaling eight years.

Preferred Qualifications

College-level academic advising experience is preferred.

  • Knowledge of the curriculum development process for specific departments.
  • Knowledge of graduate programs, careers, and job markets, and research tools related to specific academic majors, departments, or schools/colleges.
  • Knowledge of student confidentiality practices, including FERPA.

  • Demonstrated skill in the use of media and technology platforms, including but not limited to Microsoft Office applications and student data systems.
  • Demonstrated skill in collecting, compiling, analyzing, and applying information/data.
