Position Summary:
Responsible for instructing swim lessons, communicating with management and parents, maintaining a safe environment, reporting safety violations, and cleaning up equipment before and after lessons.
Required training begins in May
Hours and shifts vary between 8:30am – 6:45pm
Weekend and evening availability required

This position supervises: No Supervisory responsibilities
Essential Job Functions:
- Be at work on time at your assigned station in proper uniform before each lesson begins.
- Be familiar with all course materials and how to teach them effectively.
- Represent the park district in a positive and professional manner.
- Explain the importance of water education and safety.
- Help evaluate students’ progress and correct problems.
- Provide constructive feedback.
- Instruct swim lessons as scheduled.
- Assist with the development of lesson plans for each session.
- At the beginning of each session, male sure all equipment is ready and in working order before you teach your class.
- Explain and enforce all safety rules to students.
- Keep all students within view.
- Perform the job in a safe manner and in compliance with District policies, procedures, safety rules, and the employee handbook.
- Supervise participants by communicating expectations, coaching, disciplining, and appraising.
- Maintain records and attendance sheets.
- Be in the water supervising and demonstrating specific skills based on the skill level and class that is being taught.
- Utilize materials available for teaching (kickboards, rings, etc.).
- Help test participants on the beginning and final days of the session.
- Assist with public safety emergencies within the direct vicinity of the Water Park.
- Anticipate and recognize aquatic emergencies.
- Demonstrate, enforce, and support park district customer service standards.
- Follow district and departmental safety, personnel, and administrative policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Punch in and out on time clock for hours worked.
- Follow dress code with uniform provided.
- Respond to customer injuries and comments in a timely fashion.
- Maintain open communication between co-workers, parents, management, and organization as a whole.
Requirements / Qualifications:
- Ability to swim
- General knowledge of swim lesson skills
- Excellent communication skills and customer service. Ability to address complaints and resolve concerns as needed in a professional manner.
- General knowledge of aquatic safety, liability, and risk management practices.
- Ability to multi-task, troubleshoot, and follow directions.
Required Certifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent is preferred
- Minimum of two years of experience in aquatics is preferred.
- First Aid/CPR Certification or ability to receive upon hire.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
- Work is subject to inside/outside environmental conditions.
- Requires occasional lifting of heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Exposure to chemicals and confined space areas.
- Requires flexibility of work schedule.
