How you’ll impact our mission:

The Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) is hiring a full-time veterinarian to support animals and the community through spay/neuter surgery, vaccine clinics, and providing care for homeless animals in our shelter. They’ll work with an amazing team of veterinarians who practice a culture of mentorship, training, and support for each other. The veterinarian reports to a supervising veterinarian and splits their time between our Milwaukee Campus and our Spay/Neuter Clinic.

Key accountabilities

  • Performing high-volume, high-quality, safe spay/neuter surgeries for shelter and public animals
  • Perform other surgeries as needed for shelter animals
  • Ensuring safe, effective and efficient medical processes from check in to discharge, including follow up
  • Vaccinating animals and providing quality medical screenings
  • Monitoring the daily health of client and shelter animals
  • Providing medical information to clients and answer questions as needed
  • Develop and implement treatment plans as needed for animals in shelter and foster
  • Train and support any WHS team members in all aspects of patient care and efficient/safe clinic practices, while maintaining a professional and positive approach
  • All other duties as assigned
 

Qualifications

  • DVM degree and license required; high volume spay/neuter or shelter medicine experience preferred; mentorship and training provided
  • Ability to partner with clients, staff, and volunteers from diverse backgrounds

  • Ability to navigate emotional aspects of animal welfare work
  • Able to successfully meet the physical demands of the job, which include stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Must be able to routinely lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

Hiring range: $95k – 120k

About us

The Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) is the oldest and largest shelter in Wisconsin. It was founded in 1879 and operates shelters in Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Door, Brown, and Kenosha Counties, as well as a Spay/Neuter Clinic in West Allis and a wildlife rehabilitation center in Milwaukee. The organization offers adoption services, youth programs, low-cost veterinary resources, retail stores, volunteer programs, dog training classes, and much more. WHS is an independent nonprofit and receives no general government funding and is not part of any national umbrella group.
