How you’ll impact our mission:

The Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) is hiring a seasonal Summer Camp Counselor to engage young people who have completed grades 1-9 in our fun-filled camp programs. The Summer Camp Counselor reports to the Director of Youth Programs and is based at the Milwaukee and Ozaukee campuses. This is a 40 hour per week role that runs from June 15 – August 21 with training taking place the week of June 15. Key accountabilities:

  • Lead campers through games, hands-on activities, presentations, and interactions with animals
  • Facilitate high-impact camp programs in alignment with organizational resources and priorities
  • Support youth program volunteers who assist with camp activities 
  • Provide a safe, interactive learning environment for campers and animals in a fast-paced environment
  • Follow all camp and youth programs protocols
  • Monitor effectiveness of camp activities and programs and work with youth programs staff on any adjustments needed 
  • Set up and clean up camp space and classrooms
  • Use organizationally aligned positive behavior strategies to support youth

Qualifications:

  • At least 18 years old
  • Ability to travel to the Milwaukee and Ozaukee campuses
  • Available for a minimum of eight of the weeks of camp and training listed above
  • Comfortable presenting to diverse groups of young people and communicating to a wide variety of audiences
  • Dedicated to providing strong customer service
  • Experience and ability to effectively work with young people who have completed grades 1-9 and meet them where they are
  • Works well with a team and can lead outlined activities with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate flexibility while juggling multiple responsibilities 
  • Comfortable handling dogs, cats, and small animals like rabbits and guinea pigs
  • Demonstrated alignment with our mission, people-centered philosophy, and organizational values of compassion, respect, and kindness; innovation; professionalism; equity; and positive approach
  • Ability to navigate emotional aspects of animal welfare work 

Hourly Rate: $15

TheWisconsin Humane Society(WHS) is the oldest and largest shelter in Wisconsin. It was founded in 1879 and operates shelters in Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Door, Brown, and Kenosha Counties, as well as a Spay/Neuter Clinic in West Allis and a wildlife rehabilitation center in Milwaukee. The organization offers adoption services, youth programs, low-cost veterinary resources, retail stores, volunteer programs, dog training classes, and much more. WHS is an independent nonprofit and receives no general government funding and is not part of any national umbrella group.
