Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the Buildings/Grounds Superintendent, this position operates various motorized vehicles and equipment to maintain the grounds and roadways at the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King (WVHK). The incumbent uses equipment such as trucks, lawn mowers, snowplows,
front-end loaders, backhoes and industrial tractors; utilizes hand and power tools to maintain lawns and shrubs; provides landscaping services; assists crafts workers and other staff in building and project works; and operates trucks and non-motorized equipment to deliver stores and supplies. The position also assists in setting up equipment and furniture for special events; maintains streets and grounds; and transports various materials.
Goals and Worker Activities
45% A. Operation of Grounds Equipment and Vehicles
A1. Operate industrial tractor backhoe in digging trenches and other excavations. A2. Operate tractors with loaders in moving materials for loading, grading, etc.
A3. Operate snow removal equipment, including truck snowplows, tractors w/loaders, garden tractors with plows and rotary brooms, snow blowers, etc.
A4. Operate various trucks in transporting materials, goods, supplies, furniture, equipment, etc.
A5. Operate loader and/or trucks for daily pickup and disposal of recycling and construction waste materials throughout campus.
A6. Operate power lawn mowers, lawn vacuums, trimmers, edgers, sod cutter, posthole diggers, sprayers, rototillers, etc. in maintaining turf, gardens and other areas of grounds.
A7. Operate forklifts in moving equipment and supplies and in loading and unloading trucks.
A8. Operate chain saws, brush saws, hedge shears, etc. in clearing, pruning and other maintenance operations.
A9. Operate compressors, air hammers, rotary street brooms, and “cherry pickers” for varied tasks in maintaining the buildings and grounds.
A10. Perform defined preventive maintenance on all grounds equipment.
30% B. Maintenance of Buildings and Grounds
B1. Maintain lawns, landscape beds, trees, shrubs, vines, flowers and other groundcover. B2. Remove hazardous deadwood limbs and clean up storm debris.
B3. Prepare land for seeding and planting of grass, trees, shrubs and flowers using power and hand tools as required for assigned tasks.
25% C. Special Events, Projects, and Deliveries
C1. Assist with set-up of special activities and major functions, such as King Days, Open House, picnics, special programs and performances, etc.
C2. Load, unload, transport and store supplies, equipment, machinery, members’ personal belongings, etc.
C3. Clean up and haul rubbish and other disposable items as needed.
C4. Assist Crafts employees and others in general maintenance, repair and construction activities of buildings, retaining walls, park equipment, etc.
C5. Work with various work units and volunteer groups to support member outdoor activities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Ability to operate a variety of light to heavy motorized vehicles

Preferred Qualifications
· Valid driver’s license
· Ability to meet regulations for driving a State of Wisconsin fleet vehicle
Physical Requirements
Job duties require the ability to perform light and heavy work, including exerting force at times over 100 pounds to move, remove and/or install objects; climb and work off ladders and/or scaffolding; handle chemicals, use personal protective equipment (e.g., hearing protection, hard hats, safety glasses, dust masks, gloves, leg protection, etc.), work clothing and coverings; and work with loud, shaking and/or vibrating equipment.
Environmental Conditions
Interior building conditions are those normally found in a long-term health care facility.
WVH-King is a multi-building institution. Some buildings are connected by a network of underground tunnels. The facilities are located on acreage of varying geography. Work is performed throughout the campus in all weather conditions.
