CNA is directory responsible to the Charge Nurse of the Unit and is supervised by the Nurse in Charge and/or staff RNs and LPNs as assigned.

CNA functions as a member of the patient care team by assisting with activities of daily living that do not required intervention by licensed personnel.

STANDARDS, POLICIES AND PROCEDURES: CNA maintains the standards of Nursing Service and implements the policies and procedures of the nursing home. Performs duties on the nursing units as assigned or indicated.

Under the direction of the Nurse in Charge:

  • Utilize proper body mechanics in lifting, moving and positioning.
  • Keep nurses informed of pertinent resident observations and complaints.
  • Keeps Nurse in Charge informed of work completed, in progress or interrupted.
  • Promptly answers residents call light. Call lights should be answered and responded to immediately to let them know that you are aware of their need. Reports residents' needs of complaints to the Nurse in Charge if these are out of the CNAs realm of responsibility.
  • Gives AM care or PM care to the residents assigned to or as nurse request for other. Oral hygiene before and after meals, at bedtime. Bathing needs as resident requires, changing of linens, washing face and hands, adding blanket if needed or requested, making room clean and uncluttered before leaving the room, adjusting light or blinds for time of day/night, being sure call bell is in residents reach, bed in low position and if rails needed they are up, giving perineal care or assisting to BR or bedpan as needed.
  • Assists with admission process of new residents.
  • Assist with the discharge of residents.
  • after resident discharge, clean and return any equipment and supplies to the proper places.
  • Keeps intake and output records when ordered on residents.
  • Provides perineal care for residents every 2 hours and as needed to keep our residents clean and free of infections and breakdown.
  • Check vital signs (B/P, T, P and R) and report any abnormalities to the nurse.
  • Serve nourishment to residents between meals and PRN.
  • Know what protective equipment to use for isolation and assist in care of isolation residents.
  • Run errands as requested.
  • Assists residents to: sit up in chair, dangle feet on side of bed, transfer to and from wheelchair/stretcher, ambulate and change position and toilet.
  • Reads Kardex daily on residents they are caring for to ensure proper care to be given

SAFETY: Orients self to the use and location of emergency equipment. Helps maintain and monitor for a safe environment. Maintains certification in BCLS. maintains annual review of Fire/Safety/Infection Control and internal/external disaster plans. Checks equipment for proper functioning and reports faulty equipment to appropriate person.

INITIATIVE: Expected to attend in-services that are mandatory and for educational CEUs for employment. Attend any classes workshops or programs that would enhance or further your knowledge as a CNA. Attend nursing unit meetings for information or improvement of the nursing unit. Seeks guidance and help when needed. Reports incidents and information that will help to improve standards. participate in the orientation of new employees.

PLANNING, TIME UTILIZATION AND PROBLEM SOLVING: Utilizes time and resources efficiently. Finishes assignments in a timely manner. Establishes priorities in performing assigned care. Demonstrates sound judgment in making decisions and handling crises, while considering all data.

RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS: Practice courtesy at all times with resident, staff and visitors. Works to maintain an open, positive communication with residents, family and other health care professionals in house and out and the public. Promotes harmony and good working relationship with staff on assigned unit, other units and ancillary departments. Must be able to accept instruction, direction and constructive criticism. Maintains resident confidentiality at all times. Remember to smile, speak and offer help to others.

RELIABILITY/APPEARANCE: Demonstrates reliability in the conscientious and complete manner in which work is performed. Performs other duties as necessary or assigned. Reports to work punctually according to scheduled work hours. Absences are called in 2.5 hours before a schedule shift. High absences will not be tolerated. Be willing to change work hours if needed. Maintain a clean, well-groomed appearance with uniform neat clean and fitting

Complies with HIPPA privacy/security regulations. Security Access Level III.

EDUCATION: Must be a graduate of a Nurse Aide Program and have a current, active MS Nurse Aide License.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds, be able to stand, turn, bend, stoop, lift climb, and use a great majority of physical motion in performing day to day activities of work. Must be able to stand for extended periods of time without experiencing extreme fatigue. May be exposed to communicable diseases and radiation.

SPECIAL DEMANDS: Must be able to work under pressure and with the realization that mistakes and inadequate job performance can result in serious resident complications. Must be able to accept limited responsibility and to respect authority. Must report for duty as scheduled and as job demands. Must maintain a position of trust relative to the disclosure of information. Must maintain a quiet atmosphere, and must be adaptable to change. Must be able to smile, meet and greet residents, staff and visitors acknowledging them and asking if you can help them and/or get them they need or waht they need.
