HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

 

CERTIFICATION/REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A valid CT State certification (092 endorsement)
  • Minimum of six years successful experience as a building administrator; experience as a principal preferred
  • Demonstrated successful experience in instructional leadership
  • Sixth Year Certificate or equivalent

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Documented evidence of past superior job performance in leadership capacity
  • Experience teaching and/or leading at a high performing comprehensive high school
  • Demonstrated successful experience as a school administrator
  • Demonstrated experience with contemporary technological approaches to enhancing learning, scheduling, grading and student recordkeeping
  • Demonstrated knowledge/experience identifying and using best practices for instruction, staff performance appraisal, and student management
  • Such additions and alternatives to the above qualifications as may be appropriate and acceptable
  • Demonstrated experience raising achievement and closing achievement gaps

 

REPORTS TO:   Superintendent of schools

 

SUPERVISES:    All administrative staff assigned to the building, and selected staff members and departments as determined on an annual basis.

 

 

JOB GOAL:  Provide leadership and vision in order to establish and maintain a nurturing, respectful, and personalized school experience that provides all students at Wilton High School with the tools to achieve academic and personal excellence.  To implement Board of Education regulations, school policies, and performance responsibilities in order to actualize the Vision of a Learner and the vision and mission of the Wilton Public Schools. 

 

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Directs the overall management of the school including academic, co-curricular, and support programs through coordination of the administrative staff and instructional leaders and with accountability to central office administration, particularly to the superintendent of schools.
  • Directs strategic planning processes that identify needs, implement appropriate plans, and assess results in order to develop a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Oversees the general administration of the school; screening and recommending personnel; preparing teacher and student handbooks; planning and coordinating, with the assistant principals, all activities related to school opening and closing.
  • Establish annual goals in consultation with the superintendent of schools for the school on a clearly defined priority basis, prepare strategies for achieving these goals, and develop criteria for evaluating the attainment of the goals.
  • Coordinates and completes all budgets within the school. Prepares and submits the final budgetary request for the building, including projection of staffing needs, and monitors the expenditure of all funds.
  • Work collaboratively with high school and district administrative teams to ensure successful implementation of school and district mission and strategic plan goals.
  • Implement Board of Education policies and regulations, school goals, and performance responsibilities in order to ensure that all students are provided every opportunity to reach their full potential.
  • Provide direction and oversight for instructional leaders in assessing student learning needs and assist in developing programs designed to meet those needs.
  • Meet with building leadership and teachers to study common problems, reduce conflict situations, and provide
  • Develop programs and activities that enhance communication and encourage meaningful involvement by staff, students, parents, and the community in the affairs of the school.
  • Oversee the development of Program of Studies with a focus on new and proposed courses that maintain or exceed district standards in terms of relevance and vision.
  • Provide leadership and direction for school-based administrators working collaboratively with the Office of Special Services; ensure that appropriate services are monitored and delivered through Planning and Placement Teams, the Student Assistance Teams, and the Pupil Study Team.
  • Ensure the implementation and effectiveness of Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)
  • Leveraging teacher-leaders, building administration, student leadership, and parent groups, work closely with students and parents to ensure that school rules and regulations are understood and followed.
  • Supervises departments by working closely with instructional leaders on curriculum, schedules, budget, teaching assignments, and all issues related to department management.
  • Develops program to orient staff to the broad purposes of the school, as well as to specific required skills in instructional methodologies and school procedures .
  • Evaluate select Wilton High School teaching and support staff as designated annually and ensure overall compliance with the Wilton Public Schools staff evaluation plans.
  • Counsels with employees to resolve complaints, difficulties, and other matters related to personnel management.
  • In consultation with the superintendent, establishes annual action goals on a clearly defined priority basis, prepares strategies for achieving those goals, and develops criteria for evaluating the accomplishments of the established goals.
  • Oversee and contribute to the development of staff development programs for teachers and instructional leaders.
  • Attends meetings of the Board of Education and participates as requested by the superintendent.
  • Supervise the Wilton High School athletic director assuring a high quality athletic program.
  • Lead the coordination and supervision of extra-curricular and evening school activities.
  • Coordinate the evaluation of currently existing programs.
  • Establish and maintain favorable relationships with local community groups and individuals to foster understanding and solicit support for overall school objectives and program.
  • Keep informed on current trends, practices, and research in secondary education by advanced study, by visiting school systems, by attending conferences, and by other appropriate means.
  • Accept additional assignments in the role of principal as directed by the superintendent of schools.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:       261 day position

 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:    Normal office physical demands; ability to be present throughout the physical plant of the high school; ability to travel to all school sites throughout the district as needed

 

 

EVALUATION:  Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of Board policy on Evaluation of Administrative Personnel, the district’s professional evaluation and support plan and in concert with the WASA collective bargaining agreement
