What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Surgical Services position at WILSON COUNTY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL DISTRICT?
Summary Under the direction of the Director of Patient Services of the service, the nurse manager has 24-hour responsibility for the effective implementation of the philosophy, goals, policies, and procedures of the hospital and the nursing department and their effect on patient care in a designated unit. The nurse manager has authority to make decisions on that unit in the areas of patient care, human resource, and financial management.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Selects, schedules, assigns, and evaluates staff, adjusting hours and shifts as necessary.
- Orients new staff and assures that training and education needs of staff are met.
- Evaluates activities of unit or clinic to ensure patient care, staff relations, and efficiency of service.
- Observes nursing care and visits patients to ensure that nursing care is carried out as directed and treatment is administered in accordance with physician instructions.
- Develops, implements, and evaluates unit or clinic policies, goals, and objectives.
- Participates in infection control, discharge planning, utilization review, case management, and quality assessment activities and analysis.
- Interprets and enforces department and institution policies.
- Participates in the development and monitoring of unit budget.
- Participates in appropriate department and hospital committees.
- Directs preparation and maintenance of patients' clinical records.
- Inspects rooms and wards for cleanliness and comfort.
- Accompanies physician on rounds, and keeps informed of special orders concerning patients.
- Orders or directs ordering of drugs, solutions, and equipment, and maintains records on narcotics.
- Investigates and resolves complaints, or refers unusual problems to superior.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Current license as RN in Texas, or a Compact state
B.S. with concentration in nursing preferred
Three years clinical experience preferred
Management Experience preferred

Directly supervises 8 employees in the Surgical Services. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Qualifications:Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Current license as RN in Texas, or a Compact state
