Lead Java Developer – Java 21, Spring Boot and AWS

Compensation: $84.48 per hour
Schedule: 40 hours per week

We are seeking an experienced Lead Java Developer to support the modernization of a large-scale public-sector health and human services platform. The selected developer will design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain mission-critical microservices and applications supporting complex case-management operations.

This is a full-time, long-term contract expected to begin October 8, 2026, and continue through May 3, 2029. The position follows a hybrid work arrangement based in Albany, New York.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain Java microservices using Spring Boot.
• Apply domain-driven design and service-decomposition best practices.
• Build loosely coupled, independently deployable services with clearly defined API contracts.
• Develop scalable web applications, RESTful APIs, batch-processing jobs, and integration services.
• Develop and optimize Spring Batch jobs for high-volume data processing, scheduled workflows, and reporting.
• Build data-access layers using Hibernate and JPA with PostgreSQL databases.
• Implement synchronous REST communication, asynchronous messaging, and event-driven integration patterns.
• Collaborate with architects, business analysts, and cross-functional teams to translate requirements into technical solutions.
• Participate in code reviews and enforce coding, security, testing, and documentation standards.
• Mentor junior developers and provide technical guidance to development teams.
• Diagnose and resolve application issues across distributed microservices.
• Support CI/CD pipeline improvements and deployment automation.
• Create unit and integration tests to ensure application quality and reliability.
• Support third-party and inter-agency system integrations.
• Perform other related responsibilities as assigned.

Mandatory Qualifications

• More than seven years of professional experience working on complex technology projects.
• At least two years of experience serving in a developer leadership role.
• Seven or more years of professional Java development experience.
• Strong hands-on proficiency with Java 21, including records, sealed classes, pattern matching, and virtual threads.
• At least one year of experience designing and building microservices architectures.
• Experience with service decomposition, API gateway patterns, service discovery, and distributed configuration.
• Experience deploying and operating microservices using AWS services such as EC2, ECS, EKS, RDS, S3, SQS, and Lambda.
• Seven years of experience with Spring Boot and the Spring ecosystem, including Spring MVC, Spring Data, Spring Security, and Spring Cloud.
• Experience using Spring Batch for large-scale batch processing.
• Strong experience with Hibernate and JPA for object-relational mapping and database interaction.
• Experience working with PostgreSQL or a comparable relational database.
• Experience building and consuming versioned RESTful APIs using contract-first design.
• Experience with inter-service communication using REST, messaging queues, or event-driven architecture.
• Current authorization to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience supporting government or public-sector technology projects.
• Experience with Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or comparable CI/CD tools.
• Knowledge of distributed-system concerns, including fault tolerance, circuit breakers, retries, and observability.
• Experience with saga, CQRS, event sourcing, and API-composition patterns.
• Experience with AWS API Gateway, Spring Cloud Gateway, service mesh technologies, or similar solutions.
• Strong knowledge of software design patterns, SOLID principles, and clean-code practices.
• Experience with Git and collaborative development workflows.
• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, ECS, or comparable container-orchestration platforms.
• Experience with SQS, SNS, Kafka, or other message-driven technologies.
• Knowledge of database-per-service patterns and migration tools such as Flyway or Liquibase.
• Experience with CloudWatch, Splunk, Datadog, Zipkin, or OpenTelemetry.
• Knowledge of Terraform, CloudFormation, or other infrastructure-as-code tools.
• Experience securing microservices using OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect.
