TITLE:                Reading Specialist

 

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Providing reading instruction to students, evaluating student performance in reading, motivating students to develop strategies and skills in the area of reading; performing related work as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Candidate must be a graduate of an accredited college or university and possess or be eligible for a Virginia Department of Education license with an endorsement in reading.
  2. Candidate must hold a Master’s Degree in the field of Reading from an accredited college or university.
  3. Strong organizational, management and leadership skills.
  4. Demonstrated successful instructional experience, general leadership ability and personal characteristics necessary for working with staff, parents and community.
  5. Alternative qualifications as the Superintendent and School Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Maintains and respects confidentiality of student and school personnel information.
  2. Meets and instructs the students(s) in assigned locations and at the designated times.
  3. Designs coherent instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, current instructional practices, students, the community, and curriculum goals.
  4. Plans instruction to achieve desired objectives that reflect the Virginia Standards of Learning and division curriculum guidelines.
  5. Prepares for classes assigned and shows evidence of lesson preparation upon request of the building administrator(s).
  6. Diagnoses individual, group, and program needs and plans for the appropriate use of time, materials, and resources to match the ability and needs of all students.
  7. Evaluates students' progress. provides students with specific evaluative feedback. maintains appropriate records and prepares progress information for reports.
  8. Uses a variety of assessment strategies and instruments to make both short-term and long-range instructional decisions to improve student learning.
  9. Administers standardized tests in accordance with established procedures, as requested by the building administrator(s).
  10. Prepares and submits reports, as required.
  11. Identifies and communicates specific student performance expectations and documents student learning gains using appropriate assessment instruments.
  12. Demonstrates an understanding of curriculum and current instructional practices.
  13. Creates learning experiences that make the subject matter meaningful for all students.
  14. Understands that students differ in their learning styles and differentiates instruction to meet diverse student needs.
  15. Uses appropriate materials, technology and resources in a manner that promotes the development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills.
  16. Selects, evaluates, and refines a variety of teaching methods and instructional strategies for the active engagement of students and improvement of student learning.
  17. Implements a discipline policy that fosters a safe and positive environment for all students and staff.
  18. Ensures the adequate supervision of students.
  19. Manages classroom procedures to maximize academic learning time, in order to motivate students to achieve maximum potential.
  20. Establishes and maintains rapport with students.
  21. Creates a supportive learning environment for all students that encourages social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.
  22. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  23. Uses effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques to foster positive interactions in the classroom.
  24. Works collaboratively with regular classroom teachers, staff, administrators, parents, and community resources to support the success of a diverse student population.
  25. Models professional, moral, and ethical standards as well as personal integrity in all interactions.
  26. Takes responsibility for and participates in a meaningful and continuous process of professional development.
  27. Works in a collegial and collaborative manner with peers, school personnel, and the community to promote and support student learning.
  28. Complies with and supports school and division regulations and policies.
  29. Provides a good role model of an educated professional in appearance, demeanor, dress and behavior.
  30. Communicates with regular classroom teachers, students, student counselors, and parents through conferences and other means.
  31. Participates in curriculum development programs, faculty committees, and student activity sponsorship as required.
  32. Assumes responsibilities outside the classroom as they relate to school.
  33. Provides support for the regular classroom teacher in relation to the Standards of Learning, remedial instruction, and the county framework.
  34. Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
  35. Performs related duties as assigned by the administration in accordance with the school/system policies and practices.


PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:

 

Duties performed typically in school settings to include: classroom; gym, cafeteria; auditorium; and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, light lifting, up to 40 pounds, and other limited physical activities are required. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be necessary. Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Regular Instruction to special needs children may be necessary. Occasional lifting of equipment such as audio-visuals weighing up to 50 pounds may be required. Daily personal and close contact with children to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required. Regular contact with other staff members and parents is required. Occasional contact with medical professionals may be required. Frequent contact with fanilies is necessary.

 

 

EVALUATION:

 

Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of personnel.

 

TERMS OF CONTRACT:

 

10 Month – 200 Days- 7.5 Hours per Day

 

Reports to Principal

 

 

 The salary range included is from the 2025-2026 salary scale.  

Salary : $56,082 - $77,791
