Senior Accountant / Accounting Manager

Wilkin Insulation Company
Mount Prospect, IL Full Time
POSTED ON 7/25/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 8/23/2026

Wilkin Insulation is seeking a Part-Time Senior Accountant / Accounting Manager to help improve the accuracy, timeliness, and reliability of our accounting and financial reporting processes.

This role is a strong fit for someone who has done the full accounting cycle, understands month-end close, knows how to reconcile the balance sheet, and can explain how billing, revenue recognition, expenses, and cash flow connect. The ideal candidate enjoys clean books, clear processes, practical reporting, and working directly with ownership and office staff.

Construction accounting experience is helpful but not required. We will train the right person in our industry, job costing, WIP, retainage, AIA-style billing, and construction-specific reporting. What we do require is strong accounting judgment, curiosity, follow-through, and the ability to learn construction accounting concepts quickly.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge of month-end close and over/under billing or comparable revenue-recognition concepts, such as deferred revenue, unbilled revenue, work performed versus billed, or project-based revenue timing.

Key Responsibilities

- Own or materially support the monthly close process, including recurring close checklists, deadlines, review steps, and follow-up items.

- Prepare, review, or support journal entries, accruals, prepaids, depreciation, payroll-related entries, inventory-related entries, and month-end adjustments.

- Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, payroll liabilities, balance sheet accounts, and other recurring general ledger accounts.

- Review P&L, balance sheet, and cash-flow information for completeness, accuracy, unusual variances, and items requiring follow-up.

- Support job-cost reporting and learn Wilkin's construction accounting workflows, including WIP, over/under billing, retainage, cost-to-complete, and project-level profitability.

- Help ensure accounting records reflect accurate job setup, billing requirements, cost coding, material costs, payroll information, AP, AR, and documentation.

- Assist with monthly or periodic review of inventory, material cost information, and related accounting entries.

- Support accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, collections follow-up, use tax, 1099s, insurance documentation, and related accounting processes as needed.

- Work with ownership, finance staff, project managers, field leadership, warehouse/materials staff, and outside accountants to gather missing information and resolve accounting questions.

- Create or improve recurring accounting checklists, calendars, process notes, and documentation so the accounting function is less dependent on individual memory.

- Participate in accounting system and process improvements, including future ERP or accounting software changes, as appropriate for the agreed schedule.

- Serve as a steady accounting resource who can identify issues, explain the financial impact, and recommend the next practical steps.

Required Qualifications

- 7 years of accounting experience in a senior accountant, accounting manager, full-charge bookkeeper, controller, public accounting, or similar role.

- Demonstrated experience with month-end close, journal entries, accrual accounting, general ledger review, and balance sheet reconciliations.

- Ability to explain over/under billing or comparable revenue-recognition concepts, including the difference between work performed, revenue recognized, amounts billed, and cash collected.

- Strong understanding of P&L, balance sheet, and cash-flow relationships.

- Strong Excel skills and comfort working with accounting systems, reports, reconciliations, and exports.

- High attention to detail, strong organization, and consistent follow-through.

- Ability to ask good questions, document issues clearly, and follow up professionally when information is missing.

- Willingness and aptitude to learn construction accounting, job costing, WIP, retainage, and project-based reporting.

Preferred Qualifications

- Construction accounting, job-cost accounting, WIP, over/under billing, AIA billing, retainage, lien waiver, or project accounting experience.

- Experience in a specialty contractor, general contractor, manufacturing, distribution, service, or other job-cost/project-based environment.

- Experience with QuickBooks, Foundation, Sage 300/Timberline, Viewpoint, CMiC, ComputerEase, or another accounting/ERP system.

- Payroll, payroll tax, union payroll, certified payroll, or multi-state/local tax exposure.

- CPA, CMA, accounting degree, or equivalent experience preferred but not required.

What Success Looks Like

- Month-end close is more consistent, organized, and timely.

- Balance sheet reconciliations are current and reviewed.

- Ownership receives cleaner P&L, balance sheet, and cash-flow information.

- Over/under billing, job-cost, WIP, and revenue timing concepts become easier for the company to review and manage.

- Accounting questions are identified early instead of being discovered after reports are produced.

- The finance function becomes less reactive and less dependent on any one person.

- Office and operations teams understand what information accounting needs and why it matters.

Benefits

Benefits may include the following. Final benefits and eligibility should be confirmed before posting and may vary based on weekly hours:

- Competitive hourly pay

- Flexible part-time schedule

- Hybrid flexibility after onboarding
