What are the responsibilities and job description for the Skin Intelligence Engineer position at Widger Talent?
Ester Health, a new healthtech platform for skin, is looking for a founding Skin Intelligence Engineer to own the long-term intelligence layer behind our skin analysis, recommendations, and personalization.
We're partnering with an established vendor to power skin intelligence in the near term — which means this role isn't about shipping v1 fast. It's about building something that lasts. You'll define what we measure, how we validate it, and how Ester gets meaningfully smarter as users track their skin over time. This is a rare opportunity to architect a proprietary learning loop from the ground up, with controlled scan data, real routines, and observable outcomes that most companies never have access to.
What You'll Do
- Own the technical foundation for Ester's skin analysis, scoring, and recommendation systems
- Define metric semantics, quality bars, validation methods, and failure modes for consumer-facing skin insights
- Build evaluation and data workflows that learn from longitudinal scans, product usage, routines, and outcomes
- Build the foundation for product and routine recommendations based on skin analysis, user goals, and observed response
- Make practical method choices across CV/ML, recommender systems, longitudinal models, and custom approaches
- Partner with product, engineering, and advisors on safe claims, user-facing explanations, and validation rigor
What We're Looking For
- Strong applied ML/CV and engineering execution, especially in real-world image systems
- Strong data and evaluation instincts — comfortable defining metrics, benchmarks, and failure modes from first principles
- Product judgment around confidence, calibration, explainability, and recommendation quality
- Comfort owning ambiguous, end-to-end systems with high accountability
- Interest or experience in recommendation systems, longitudinal modeling, personalization, or treatment-effect-style measurement
Bonus: experience with dermatology or skin imaging, consumer health, beauty tech, data labeling, benchmark workflows, model monitoring, or experimentation.
Why This Role
Ester's long-term advantage depends on building best-in-class skin intelligence internally. Controlled scans, routines, product usage, and real skin outcomes create a rare signal — the kind that compounds into something genuinely proprietary. This role owns the systems that turn that signal into trustworthy skin metrics, smarter recommendations, and a learning loop that no one else can replicate.
Early success looks like: clear standards for which insights are ready to show users, a practical validation process for accuracy and repeatability, and a roadmap for where first-party CV/ML and longitudinal models create durable advantage.
What We Offer
- Competitive salary and equity
- High-energy, fast-moving environment with significant growth potential
- Access to best-in-class skincare advisors and resources
- The chance to build something that genuinely hasn't been built before
