PRE-SCHOOL TEACHER – Work in a classroom environment with students ages 6 weeks – 5 years.

SUMMARY AND PURPOSE OF POSITION:

To provide a safe, nurturing and motivating classroom environment where children are happy and challenged through playful and educational activities. To prepare students for elementary school by fostering social skills, cognitive skills, motor skills, work habits and language skills. Introduce children to the school environment through a balance of games, leisure and educational activities. To be a role model for the children and set an example of positive adult interaction.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following describes the normal duties of this position. Duties may vary or be amended, as well as others be assigned and expected.

  • Promote learning and personal development through the use of books, music, singing, dancing, rhythmic activities, use of various art materials and social interaction.
  • Organize learning through development of short and long range classroom planning (i.e. daily lesson plans, weekly themes) based on curriculum. Establish a predictable routine for the day.
  • Introducing children to language through the use of vocabulary skills, language arts, letter recognition, word recognition, letter sounds and writing.
  • Create a physical environment that is welcoming, warm and engages and encourages students to interact and learn.
  • Provide a safe environment by maintaining an orderly, clean and appealing classroom; eliminating or removing safety hazards; daily cleaning of bathrooms, vacuuming of carpets, mopping of floors, trash removal, etc.; follow necessary sanitation procedures in diapering areas, bathrooms and at mealtimes.
  • Coordinate a balance of outside and inside learning experiences. Insure children are dressed appropriately for outside activities according to the temperature.
  • Set clearly defined age appropriate limits and discipline and administer appropriate discipline as needed. Redirect unacceptable behavior and offer children choices.
  • Prepare and present displays of students art projects and work.
  • Be proactive in matters relating to health and safety of children. Reports to administration any unusual or extreme behavior which may indicate emotional, developmental or physical problems.
  • Promotes health by assisting children with personal cleanliness and self-care. Assist in learning to feed, drink, wash hands, use bathroom facilities, etc. Model good eating attitudes and provide a relaxed mealtime atmosphere.
  • Document individual progress for education records through the use of daily sheets and tri-annual assessments.
  • Promotes parent involvement and communication through keeping parents involved in child’s progress, preparing written daily sheets, conducting parent/teacher meetings when needed. Maintains confidentiality in matters pertaining to the status, development and finances of individual children and families.
  • Improve Teaching Job Knowledge by attending educational workshops and continuing education and staff meetings.

OTHER DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibilities/important duties performed occasionally or in addition to the essential duties of the position. Any additional comments relevant to the position needs.

  • Work School Activities and Functions.
  • Clean up after children, including diarrhea, vomit, spills, etc.
  • Re-arrange classroom to support a new, fresh nurturing environment.
  • Cover for other age groups, as needed.
  • Responsible for additional after school-related activities.
  • Responsible for stock and inventory of all supplies needed in his/her classroom.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Schooled in early childhood education.
  • Senior Staff should, at a minimum, have completed Child Care I and Child Care II Courses.
  • Associate or Bachelors Degree preferred, but not required.
  • 1 year experience in child care with children ages 6 weeks – 5 years or 1 year college credit.
  • Desire to work with young children and families.
  • Passion for child development.
  • Work effectively in the absence of supervision.
  • Commitment to professional development.
  • Enthusiastic team player.
  • Demonstrate ability to establish and maintain behavior expectancies, including an orderly, effective and safe environment, proven ability for motivating others, resolving conflict, objectivity, confidentiality, and emotional control.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationship with parents, students, staff and administration.
  • Operate a computer and computer software.
  • Maintain CPR & First Aid Certification – for infant/toddlers and adults.

  • School work environment subject to sitting at a desk or standing for long periods of time.
  • Bending and crouching, kneeling, pushing/pulling, reaching in all directions and working at a computer or other standard school equipment.
  • Sit in small chairs, at child level.
  • Ability to speak, read and write effectively in the English Language.
  • Must be able to lift and carry children up to at least 35 pounds.
  • Ability to move classroom furniture, etc. on a regular basis and lift occasionally up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in air conditioned indoor environment as well as outdoor during all seasons.
