About the Role:
As a Cook within the Health Care and Social Assistance industry, you will play a vital role in preparing nutritious and safe meals tailored to the dietary needs of residents and families and visitors alike. Your work will directly contribute to the well-being and recovery of individuals by ensuring that food is prepared hygienically, meets health standards, and accommodates any special dietary restrictions. You will collaborate closely with nursing staff, life enrichment team and kitchen teams to deliver meals that support therapeutic and health goals while ensuring a homelike dining to meet each residents psychosocial needs. This role requires attention to detail, consistency in food quality, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment. Ultimately, your efforts will help create a positive dining experience that supports the overall care environment.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Proven experience in food preparation and cooking, preferably in a healthcare or institutional setting.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English to understand recipes, safety protocols, and communicate with team members.
- Manual dexterity and physical stamina to stand for extended periods and perform kitchen tasks efficiently.
- Basic and enhanced knowledge of food safety standards and hygiene practices.
- Capability to climb stairs and perform physical activities required in a kitchen environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification in food safety or culinary arts is preferred but not required!
- Experience working under the supervision of a Head Chef or in a structured kitchen team.
- Familiarity with specialized dietary requirements such as diabetic, low-sodium, or allergen-free meal preparation.
- Previous experience in a healthcare or social assistance food service environment.
- Additional language skills to support diverse patient populations.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare and cook meals according to established recipes and dietary guidelines specific to healthcare settings.
- Ensure all food preparation and storage complies with health, safety, and sanitation regulations.
- Assist the Head Chef and kitchen team in menu planning and inventory management to maintain adequate food supplies.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the kitchen and workstations, including proper handling of kitchen equipment.
- Communicate effectively with healthcare staff to accommodate special dietary needs and respond to any food-related concerns.
Skills:
The required skills such as food preparation and food production are essential for daily meal creation that meets nutritional and safety standards. Speaking and reading English enable clear communication with healthcare staff and understanding of recipes and safety instructions. Manual dexterity is critical for handling kitchen tools and ingredients precisely, while physical stamina allows the cook to stand for long periods and navigate kitchen spaces, including climbing stairs when necessary. Preferred skills like experience with a Head Chef and knowledge of specialized diets enhance the ability to contribute to menu planning and accommodate resident needs effectively. Together, these skills ensure the cook can maintain a safe, efficient, and responsive kitchen environment that supports patient health and satisfaction.
