The purpose of this classification is to perform as a leader for the Public Works Mechanic Shop crew of workers in
monitoring and executing preventive maintenance and repairs on all equipment/vehicles. This classification will assist the Shop Supervisor in overseeing, scheduling, and maintaining the parts inventory for the repair and maintenance of County vehicles and equipment.
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Serves as lead worker in overseeing the activities of the mechanic shop work crew; assigns and directs work; trains in job skills; evaluates work and makes recommendations for performance appraisals; supervises the duties of prisoners on work release if necessary; maintains work standards.
Leads a crew in the performance of various tasks associated with monitoring and executing preventive maintenance and repairs on a variety of automobiles, trucks, light, medium, and heavy equipment, and other specialized equipment.
Inspects, performs preventive maintenance and services a variety of equipment and vehicles; uses a variety of testing procedures and equipment to diagnose problems; replaces, repairs and/or rebuilds defective or worn parts and systems to restore vehicles and equipment to good working condition. Work ranges from preventive maintenance to overhauling vehicle and equipment parts and systems including engines, transmissions, brakes, tires, electric and hydraulic parts, exhaust systems, etc.
 
Oversees the maintenance logs of work performed and parts used; maintains equipment and vehicle records.
 
Test drives vehicles and equipment to ensure proper working conditions.
 
Installs additional accessories on vehicles and equipment; fabricates, cuts, and welds various items for vehicles and equipment; installs, maintains, and repairs various pumps.
 
Monitors and provides road service repairs for all County vehicles and equipment; stocks and maintains service vehicle.
 
Assists in order and maintaining parts inventory; picks up parts from suppliers as needed; stocks parts and cleaning agents.
 
Reads plans and drawings; performs layout, design, and fabrication for projects; orders materials and supplies; insures that all projects are completed according to specifications; insures that proper materials/tools are used for each repair job, and that materials are correctly mixed and applied; prices parts/tools for purchase orders.
Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure the safety of employees and other individuals. 
Assures a clean and safe shop at all times.
Monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
Oversees the monitoring of inventory levels of equipment, tools, and supplies; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; initiates requests for new or replacement materials; hauls materials, tools, and equipment.
Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, work orders, fuel logs, vehicle/equipment maintenance reports, equipment repair requests, timesheets, or other documents.
Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
May serve on call after hours for emergencies.
Operates a paver, roller, distributor, motor grader, backhoe, track/wheel loaders, dozers, ball field maintenance equipment, dump truck, service truck, guardrail truck, forklift, scraper, chipper, hydro-seeder, paint truck, hay blower, skid steer, lute, shovel, hand broom, string line, concrete saw, concrete finishing tools, mechanic’s tools, jack hammers, rotary hammers, leveling devices, welding torches, two-way radio, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
 

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Answers the telephone and takes messages in the office; records and authorizes equipment fuel disbursement.

Delivers and picks up mail from courthouse; picks up supplies from vendors.

Performs other related duties as required.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED; three years of experience of related maintenance work; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.

Physical AbilityTasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderately heavy weight (20-50 pounds); may occasionally include heavier objects and/or materials (up to 100 pounds).
 
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
 
Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, disease, or pathogenic substances.
