Retro-Commissioning Engineer
Employment Type: Full-Time | Exempt
Pay Range: $90,000 – $118,000 annually undisclosed annual bonus
Location: Charlotte, NC; Philadelphia, PA / Newark, NJ; Tempe, AZ; Dallas, TX; Houston, TX; Los Angeles, CA; or St. Louis, MO
Schedule: Fully Onsite Travel (up to 50%)
Position Overview
Wheeler Staffing Partners is recruiting for a Retro-Commissioning Engineer to support Integrated Solutions project delivery within a Technical Services organization. This role reports to the Vice President of IS Technical Services and serves as a technical authority across all phases of commissioning and retro-commissioning (RCx) projects.
The Retro-Commissioning Engineer provides expert guidance in mechanical and energy system optimization, energy conservation measure development, and system integration. This role works closely with engineering teams, energy managers, and project leadership to ensure project outcomes are met while supporting standards development, training, and mentorship initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Pre-Engineering
- Provide technical assistance to pre-engineering teams during data collection and site surveys
Design & Pre-Construction
- Lead site surveys to evaluate existing facility conditions and project requirements
- Develop energy conservation strategies related to retro-commissioning initiatives
- Support design teams in integrating energy conservation measures across building systems
- Review RFPs for equipment and services to ensure alignment with project outcomes
- Collaborate with engineering teams in accordance with best practices, standards, and applicable codes
- Review critical equipment and system submittals for compliance with contract documents
- Conduct commissioning and peer reviews of design documents
- Advise project teams on technical and resource requirements in collaboration with the engineer of record
Construction & Acceptance
- Participate in site visits to review installation progress and quality
- Identify deficiencies and troubleshoot equipment or system installation issues
- Provide technical support to implementation teams
- Assist with optimization of complex equipment and system upgrades
Additional Responsibilities
- Identify gaps in project execution and develop standards or processes to address them
- Support or develop tools that enhance project delivery
- Resolve system integration and operational challenges
- Perform duties with minimal supervision in a collaborative, problem-solving environment
- Provide leadership, coaching, and mentorship to Technical Services staff
- Prepare technical reports and related documentation
- Develop and deliver training materials for technical teams
- Provide post-implementation on-site operations and maintenance training
- Support business decision-making through technical expertise
- Balance project constraints with required technical outcomes
- Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- 6–10 years of experience in engineering design, energy management, or retro-commissioning
- Professional Mechanical Engineering (PE) license (required)
- Expert knowledge of mechanical, energy, and building systems
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated leadership and mentoring capabilities
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and competing deadlines
- High attention to detail and adaptability
Preferred Qualifications
- Central Energy Plant (CEP), Healthcare, or Higher Education project experience
- Experience with chilled water, heating water, steam, and cooling tower water systems
- Hydronic system distribution experience
- Building automation, controls, and systems integration experience
- Test and Balance project experience
- Energy management project experience
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit
Work & Travel Requirements
- Travel required approximately 40%–60% of the time
- Ability to ascend and descend ladders and stairs
- Ability to navigate active job sites and office environments
- Ability to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds
- Exposure to indoor and outdoor environments, including varying noise levels
