Position Overview
Wheeler Staffing Partners is seeking an experienced Construction Safety Manager to lead health, safety, and environmental initiatives for commercial construction projects in Montgomery, Alabama. This role is responsible for overseeing project safety programs, ensuring regulatory compliance, conducting safety training, performing field inspections, investigating incidents, and fostering a proactive safety culture across the job site.
The ideal candidate will bring extensive construction safety experience, strong leadership capabilities, and a proven track record of managing safety programs on commercial construction projects. BCSP certification is required and is the highest-priority qualification for this position.
Key Responsibilities
Safety Program Management
- Lead and administer project health, safety, and environmental programs
- Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, company policies, and industry safety standards
- Assist in developing and implementing Project Specific Safety Plans (PSSPs)
- Support the continuous improvement of Safety and Health Management Programs (SHMPs)
- Promote a proactive safety culture across project teams, contractors, and subcontractors
- Communicate safety expectations and performance metrics to project leadership
Site Inspections & Compliance
- Conduct daily jobsite inspections to identify hazards and ensure safe work practices
- Inspect machinery, equipment, tools, and work areas for compliance with safety regulations
- Monitor employee use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Inspect fire prevention equipment, first aid supplies, and emergency response resources
- Evaluate work environments for potential hazard exposures, including noise and environmental risks
- Recommend and implement corrective actions to address identified safety concerns
Training & Employee Development
- Conduct field safety orientation training for employees and subcontractors
- Lead weekly safety meetings, toolbox talks, and site-specific training sessions
- Deliver training on company safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements
- Demonstrate safe equipment operation and work practices
- Serve as a safety resource for project teams and field personnel
- Promote safe behaviors and influence a strong safety-first culture
Incident Investigation & Reporting
- Investigate accidents, incidents, near misses, and safety violations
- Conduct root cause analyses and develop preventive action plans
- Document accidents, unsafe conditions, unsafe behaviors, and corrective actions
- Prepare daily and periodic safety reports for project leadership
- Track and monitor safety performance metrics and trends
Risk Management & Continuous Improvement
- Assist in developing and maintaining Job Safety Analyses (JSAs)
- Identify high-risk work activities and implement mitigation strategies
- Monitor safety performance and recommend process improvements
- Support project leadership in achieving safety goals and objectives
- Maintain accurate and detailed safety documentation and records
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Construction Management, or a related EHS field required
Experience
- Minimum 7 years of construction-related safety experience required
- Minimum 1 year of experience serving as an onsite construction safety professional required
- Experience overseeing health and safety programs for commercial construction projects required
- Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations, hazard control methods, industrial hygiene, and construction safety best practices
Certifications
- One of the following BCSP certifications is required:
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
- Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
- Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP)
- Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST)
- Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST)
- OSHA 30 Certification required
- OSHA Outreach Trainer certification required
- Certified First Aid, CPR, and AED Trainer required
Preferred Qualifications
- Multiple BCSP certifications
- Experience supporting large-scale commercial construction projects
- Experience developing and implementing comprehensive safety management systems
- Strong background in safety training, employee engagement, and behavior-based safety programs
