A New Era in Early Childhood Education
At the Westmoreland Intermediate Unit (WIU7), we’re reimagining classroom instruction. Our mission is simple yet powerful: Empower our youngest learners through the science of reading, meaningful play, and intentional instruction.
Why teach Early Childhood at WIU7?
We’re not following trends — we’re setting them. As an Early Childhood Teacher, you would become a part of:
- Early Childhood LETRS Training Led by Dr. Jason Stragand, Local Certified Facilitator for Early Childhood LETRS and Early Childhood Services Director, every educator receives comprehensive training in the Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) — connecting the science of reading to how 3, 4, and 5-year-olds access foundational literacy skills.
- Enhanced Alphabet Knowledge (EAK) Move beyond the letter of the week! Our students explore a letter a day, cycling through the alphabet 5–6 times each year to build fluency and familiarity through intentional, yet playful, multisensory learning.
- TeachTown Curriculum (OCDEL-Approved) Teachers implement this evidence-based curriculum aligned to the PA Early Learning Standards — supporting intentional literacy instruction and inclusive early learning.
- Innovative PDE-Approved Educator Induction Program (for new teachers) All new teachers join ELEVATE EDU: Induction Pathways to Excellence, a PDE-approved program that includes an assigned mentor and weekly support sessions through “Thriving in Year One,” led by Dr. Stragand.
- Post-Baccalaureate Learning Paid by WIU7 (percentage cost) Continue your professional journey — WIU7 covers costs for approved graduate coursework to advance your knowledge and certification.
- Collaborative Classrooms in Greensburg Each classroom follows a co-teacher assistant model with two dedicated teaching assistants, creating an optimal environment for individualized instruction and meaningful engagement.
