Position Description
WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
Anacortes, Washington
TITLE: SEXTON
PURPOSE: To provide, maintain and improve Westminster Presbyterian
Church facilities (Sanctuary Building, Discovery House and grounds) in support of the
various ministries of Westminster Presbyterian Church (WPC).
ACCCOUNTABILITY/SUPERVISOR: The Sexton shall be accountable to the Session
(WPC’s governing Board) through the Facilities Committee Chair.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Sexton position includes the following responsibilities:
1. Supervises the Custodian.
2. As requested by the Pastor, WPC Staff, Committee Chairs and other users,
arranges for WPC facilities to be set up and cleaned as needed for routine and
special events.
3. Works in support for scheduled weddings or arranges alterative coverage. Note
that compensation for weddings is handled separately from regular pay.
4. Serves as relief for the Custodian or arranges for alternative coverage.
5. Grounds maintenance including mowing, edging, trimming, cleaning, pruning,
replanting, irrigation, etc.
6. For Sunday services, opens, handles cleaning requirements between services
and closes after the last service.
7. Attends the weekly Facilities Committee work meetings and monthly Facilities
Committee business meeting.
8. Arranges for alternative coverage for the Sexton responsibilities when absence is
anticipated. Maintains an up-to-date detailed description of task responsibilities
and procedures to facilitate alternate coverage.
9. Will be on call along with others for various emergency calls such as the
monitored fire alarm system and an elevator emergency.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: In order to effectively maintain and improve the facilities
of WPC the Sexton should possess the following skills and knowledge:
1. A strong concern and commitment to maintaining and improving the facilities.
2. An attention to detail to assure that facilities are clean and ready for scheduled
events.
3. The ability to see/foresee facility maintenance and improvement needs.
4. Initiative and self-starting characteristics such that minimal direction and
supervision.
5. Ability to positively interface with multiple facility users including the Pastor, WPC
Staff, Committee Chairs, Facility Committee and outside users to identify facility
needs for routine and special event ministry needs.
6. Supervisory skills to supervise the Custodian.
7. Basic cleaning and maintenance skills.
8. Functional knowledge and understanding of various systems including
thermostats, timers, plumbing, irrigation systems, etc.
9. Must be able to lift and carry 40 lbs.
WORK SCHEDULE: While some responsibilities may be handled at a time and at the
discretion of the Sexton, many responsibilities are event and time driven and thus the
Sexton must be very flexible in meeting the event needs of the church and its ministries.
The estimated weekly hours of work to accomplish the assigned responsibilities will be
evaluated and agreed upon each year and communicated in an Annual Terms of
Employment Letter at the beginning of each year.
COMPENSATION CLASSIFICATION: The Sexton position is classified as a Part-Time,
Hourly, Non-exempt position. The hours per week will vary week to week depending on
the event schedule and grounds maintenance responsibilities but, as noted above,
evaluated and agreed upon each year. The Sexton is paid separately when working in
support of a wedding.
BENEFITS: The Sexton position is also entitled to a package of fringe benefits. These
benefits are also evaluated each year and defined in the Annual Terms of Employment
Letter at the beginning of each year. Refer to the current approved version of the HR
Policy Manual for clarification of any benefit issues.
ANNUAL REVIEW: The Facilities Committee Chair, as first-line supervisor, shall
conduct an annual performance review, gathering performance input for the past year
and writing a formal review to reflect that information. The supervisor shall go over the
review with the Sexton and submit the signed review to the Human Resources
Committee, per HR Policy.
