About the Role
As the Sexton, you are the backbone of our daily operations. You will ensure our building is "service-ready" for everything from Sunday worship to community and non-profit meetings. This is a hands-on position that combines routine custodial care with light maintenance and event logistics. You will work closely with the Church Administrator and the Property Rental Coordinator to ensure our building reflects our values of hospitality and excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintenance & Repairs: Perform routine "handyman" repairs (plumbing, HVAC, electrical) and follow preventative maintenance schedules.
- Direct Care & Cleaning: Maintain a safe and welcoming environment by performing general cleaning tasks (floors, restrooms, dusting) and grounds work (mowing, snow removal, debris clearing) aligned to church calendar.
- Vendor Coordination: Serve as the on-site point of contact for major contracted services (landscaping, specialized HVAC, etc.). Manage vendor relationships to ensure high‐quality, cost‐effective service delivery.
- Event Logistics: Physical setup and breakdown of furniture and A/V equipment for worship and community events.
- Safety & Compliance: Ensure the property meets all local, state, and federal fire, health, OSHA, and ADA standards.
- Administrative: Track building expenses to budget and identify facility needs, provide input to budgetary processes for facilities and grounds related items. Maintain records of repairs, inspections, and maintenance issue resolution.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in facilities maintenance, custodial services, or trades.
- Physical Requirement: Ability to lift 40 lbs, climb ladders, and perform outdoor labor in all weather.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions, policies, and procedures
- Self-directed and able to manage maintenance checklist and multiple priorities independently in a flexible work schedule.
- Excellent attention to detail
- Comfortable using digital tools to monitor building system, track maintenance cost, etc.
Schedule & Flexibility
This is a part-time position (nominally 28 hours per week) that offers professional autonomy. Because our church is a vibrant community hub, this role requires occasional evening and weekend availability to support worship, community, and rental events.
We prioritize work-life balance through a flexible scheduling model: hours worked during evening or weekend events are balanced with adjusted hours during the traditional workweek.
