Overview

The Crisis Responder plays a critical role in providing immediate support and intervention to individuals experiencing acute emotional or psychological distress. This position requires a compassionate and skilled professional who can assess situations effectively, implement crisis management strategies, and connect individuals with appropriate resources. The Crisis Responder works collaboratively with other behavioral health professionals and community partners to support the safety and well-being of individuals experiencing a crisis.

Important Requirements

  • Must reside within approximately 10–15 minutes of Western Lane Fire and EMS Authority to respond promptly to calls.
  • Must be physically able to stand and walk for extended periods, sometimes for several hours at a time.
  • Must be available to work 24-hour on-call shifts and respond promptly when dispatched.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough assessments to determine the immediate needs of individuals experiencing a crisis.
  • Implement crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques to stabilize individuals and reduce emotional distress.
  • Provide compassionate behavioral health support, including grief and trauma-informed support when appropriate.
  • Assist individuals with identifying coping strategies, safety planning, and connections to community resources.
  • Document all contacts, assessments, interventions, and referrals accurately and promptly.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members, behavioral health providers, emergency responders, and community partners.
  • Participate in required meetings, training, and ongoing professional development related to behavioral health and crisis intervention.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of behavioral health principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention, de-escalation, and assessment techniques.
  • Lived experience with mental health challenges or substance use, with at least two years in recovery.
  • Ability to implement effective behavior-management and coping strategies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to complete clear, accurate, and timely documentation.
  • Capacity for empathy, patience, sound judgment, and resilience when supporting individuals in distress.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in unpredictable or emotionally challenging situations.

Compensation and Stipends

  • $150 stipend for each 24-hour on-call shift.
  • $25 monthly phone stipend.
  • Additional hourly compensation may apply when responding to calls, attending required meetings, completing training, or performing other approved work duties.

This position is essential to ensuring individuals experiencing a behavioral health crisis receive timely, compassionate, and appropriate support.
