What are the responsibilities and job description for the Estimator position at WESTERN BUILDERS?
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Take off quantities of materials from blueprints in preparation of job estimates. Extend and check unit prices of bid items. Assist subcontractors with resolving questions, and/or providing direction on how to price specific items. Receive and bid level sub-bid prices. Examine field conditions for proposed job location. Prepare building estimate square footage , unit and/or assembly price analysis. Set up bid workbook / excel spreadsheet file, review printout to insure data is correct.
- Responsible for managing all bid documents (blueprints, digital, etc.). Includes ordering / printing hard copies when requested, posting documents online, ensuring easy online access and directions for subcontractors, Also includes managing all updates / addenda / revisions and ensuring that appropriate parties are advised of such changes.
- Prepare handoff information for each awarded project so that the Project Manager has all necessary documents, including: Final Estimate, all subcontractor quotes, contact lists, RFP documents, preliminary schedules, takeoff sheets, etc.
- Calling / emailing subcontractors to solicit and encourage bids and tracking responses. Includes significant researching online, phone calling, etc. Research materials manufacturers, suppliers and sales representatives for specialized and/or unique materials that are included in project designs. Contact sales channels to get budget guidance on these materials.
- Maintaining / updating the estimating database to include current and new contact information for subcontractors across multiple regions and disciplines. Includes inputting information from previous bids, researching online to identify new potential subcontractors, etc.
- Research and report economic and market data used in predicting future construction prices. This includes building cost indexes and input costs such as commodities, energy and labor indexes.
- Capable of using computers and the necessary software required by the position, such as ProEst, BuildingConnected, Word, Excel, OneNote, Adobe Acrobat / Bluebeam and other similar online take-off software tools. Ability to learn new software applicable to this position. Responsible for maintaining an extensive filing system of job-related correspondence and documents, drawings, and other data in addition to general office correspondence.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Broad knowledge of estimating practices and procedures, construction practices and techniques.
- 'Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of two years of relevant experience.
- Proficient in Word, Excel, OneNote, Adobe Acrobat / Bluebeam or other similar online take-off software tools.
- Strong organizational skills
- Expert level written and verbal communication skills
