The School of Mathematical and Data Sciences at West Virginia University invites applications for two full-time, 9-month Teaching Assistant Professors. The preferred start date is January 2, 2027. Teaching Assistant Professor appointments have renewable terms of up to three years, with no limit on the number of terms. These positions are eligible for promotion (e.g., from Teaching Assistant Professor to Teaching Associate Professor, etc.); however, promotion to senior ranks is not a requirement for institutional commitment and career stability.

The School of Mathematical and Data Sciences is a collaborative academic unit within the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University. The School offers undergraduate degree programs in Mathematics and Data Science and provides foundational mathematics instruction that supports students across numerous STEM disciplines and other academic programs throughout the University. Faculty are committed to excellence in teaching, student success, curriculum innovation, undergraduate research, and scholarly activity within a collegial and supportive environment. As part of an R1 research university, the School is investing in its future through strategic faculty hiring, continued program development, and expanded interdisciplinary collaborations. Teaching faculty are valued members of the School and play a central role in curriculum development, coordinated instruction, assessment, and initiatives that promote student success.

Responsibilities

The normal teaching load for each position is 4-4. The successful candidates will teach undergraduate courses that support the School’s instructional mission. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Teaching high-enrollment undergraduate mathematics courses, including gateway and service courses that support STEM disciplines across the University.
  • Contributing to curriculum development and continuous improvement of undergraduate mathematics instruction.
  • Participating in course coordination, assessment, and student success initiatives, as appropriate.
  • Advising and mentoring undergraduate students.
  • Participating in School governance, outreach, and professional service.
  • Supporting innovative instructional practices and evidence-based teaching.

Professional Qualifications

The successful candidates must have a Ph.D. in Mathematics or a closely related field. Late-stage ABD applicants will be considered; completion of the doctoral degree by the hire date is required.

Candidates must demonstrate: 1) potential for excellence in teaching high-enrollment, multi-section undergraduate courses, particularly gateway and service courses at or below the calculus sequence; 2) ability to use instructional technologies, including Blackboard Learning Management System, student response systems (e.g. iClicker), online graphing utilities (e.g. Desmos), and courseware packages (e.g. ALEKS, WebAssign, and MyLab Math) to support instruction; 3) ability to work effectively with colleagues in a collaborative, student-centered teaching environment; 4) an active interest in improving the effectiveness of teaching methods, especially to promote student success in gateway mathematics courses and support the success of at-risk student populations; 5) evidence of outstanding teaching, advising and mentoring; excellent written and oral communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills; 6) potential to contribute to curriculum development, assessment, instructional innovation, and continued professional development related to undergraduate education.
