POSITION: 1.0 FTE Career and Technical Education AgVentures/STEM

 

LOCATION: West Valley Junior High

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: All qualifications are required unless otherwise indicated.

  1. Career and Technical Education (CTE) Initial or Continuing Certification in:
    1. Technology  Education (V210100), Agriculture Education (V010000),  – OR – STEM (V141000)
  1. Consideration may be given to applicants who can verify 6,000 hours of required experience for the needed OSPI VCode(s). Submit documentation or an explanation of the required work experience with the application. For additional information, see: OSPI CTE Cert or VCode Chart . Applicants must complete CTE certification within 18 months of hire.
  1. Evidence of successful teaching courses in a similar setting: agriculture, environmental science, and/or STEM courses.
  2. Industry experience in STEM, agriculture, or environmental science.
  3. Evidence of providing for students' individual learning styles (basic levels and extension beyond basics).
  4. Evidence of maintaining a positive, productive learning climate within the classroom as well as with parents and colleagues.
  5. Dynamic, student-involving, hands-on instruction style.
  6. Experience or willingness to develop and implement Mastery-Based Learning practices, including Standards-Based Grading and Culturally Responsive Sustaining Education.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION 

  1. Main area of responsibility: teaching Agventures/Sustainable Living course - includes components of environmental science, modern agriculture, growing vegetables/plants, sustainable living, and career connections.
  2. Teaching one or two sections of other MLC CTE STEM courses involving design, safety practices, use of CNC routers, use of hand and select power tools, and partnering with peers on projects for the community/district.
  3. Develop lessons, activities, and projects that align with the vision of the program and district.
  4. Adhere to Mastery-Based Learning teaching and assessment best practices.
  5. Oversee the safe instruction, record keeping, and operation of students involving hydroponic and other plant growing systems, food preparation equipment, science lab equipment, and other related tools and equipment. 
  6. Collaborate with other CTE programs in grades 6-12 and other departments at the Middle-Level Campus.
  7. Fulfill CTE required duties, including, but not limited to: attending all advisory meetings, framework updates, CTSO advising, program evaluations, CPR/First Aid Certification, earning STEM clock hours, building business partnerships, incorporating 21st Century Learning Skills, and maintaining required documentation.
  8. Assume responsibility for the upkeep and safe operation of labs, classrooms, and equipment.
  9. Prepare for classes assigned and show written evidence of preparation upon request.
  10. Make a commitment of time and energy required to teach all students, regardless of learning style or learning limitations.
  11. Create a safe and positive learning environment for all students. 
  12. Adhere to all West Valley School District and West Valley Middle-Level Campus policies and expectations for staff and students.
  13. Regularly incorporate higher-level thinking and analytical skills in instruction, assessment, and performance.
  14. Be a team player by establishing and maintaining cooperative professional relationships with others.
  15. Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students, parents, and colleagues.
  16. Be innovative and committed to the challenge of changes in education.
  17. Participate in workshops and training sessions that support building and district programs and goals.  This includes monthly staff meetings and professional development days.
  18. Implement the requirements of I.D.E.A., Section 504, and A.D.A. in the education of students with disabilities.
  19. Demonstrate every period of every day relevant bell-to-bell instruction.
  20. Maintain a secure classroom environment.
  21. Actively participate in WVSD’s professional development program (TAP/ACCEL).

Working Relationships
Work in partnership with both large and small groups of teachers and other professional staff. Communicate regularly with students, parents/guardians, and teaching staff. Team up with grade-level colleagues to plan lessons, analyze student data, and maintain a focus on continuous improvement. Cooperate with the building administrator in the observation and evaluation process. When working with instructional paraprofessionals, provide appropriate lesson plans and activity supervision. May deal with a wide range of student abilities and behaviors; may occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students.

Working Conditions
The daily work is performed in a classroom setting. The job incumbent is often required to stand or sit for prolonged periods, be exposed to a computer display terminal for prolonged periods, and meet externally imposed and inflexible deadlines. May be required to work outdoors in inclement weather; lift, move, and position students and equipment; supervise students, bus loading/unloading; attend to students’ personal hygiene; may be required to deal with distraught, angry, or hostile individuals; may need to take precautions to avoid exposure to student bodily fluids and cleaning or disinfecting compounds; required to work in non-routine positions for extended periods.

 

Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting (able to lift 50 pounds and assist in lifting over 50 pounds), carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 34% sitting, 33% walking, and 33% standing. The job related is performed under a generally hazard-free environment and in a clean atmosphere
