CERTIFIED TEACHER – CTE COMPUTER SCIENCE/STEM & APPLIED MATH (1.0 FTE)
LOCATION: Ellensburg High School
REPORTS TO: CTE Director & Building Principal
PURPOSE
Design, implement, and continuously improve a comprehensive Computer Science, STEM, and Applied Math Career and Technical Education (CTE) program that prepares students for postsecondary pathways, industry credentials, and high-demand careers in technology and STEM-related fields. Provide engaging instruction, meaningful career-connected learning experiences, and support student development through the High School and Beyond Plan (HSBP) by developing and communicating clear learning targets and success criteria aligned to state standards and industry expectations, with instruction and professional practice aligned to the Washington State Teacher Evaluation Criteria and district instructional framework.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Instruction & Student Learning
- Deliver engaging, standards-aligned instruction in Computer Science, STEM, and Applied Math pathways using a variety of instructional and assessment strategies to meet diverse student needs
- Integrate computational thinking, problem-solving, and real-world applications into daily instruction
- Support student development of meaningful High School and Beyond Plans through pathway alignment and postsecondary planning
- Maintain a safe, inclusive, and effective learning environment
- Establish and communicate high expectations for student learning and performance, ensuring all students are challenged and supported to achieve at high levels
- Use formative and summative assessment practices to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly
Program Development & Leadership
- Design and maintain a sequenced CTE Program of Study aligned to state standards, industry expectations, and regional labor market needs in computer science and STEM fields
- Develop and update curriculum, course frameworks, and instructional materials, including integration of applied mathematics concepts
- Use student performance, enrollment, completion, and labor market data to evaluate and continuously improve program effectiveness
- Complete required program planning, reporting, and evaluation in alignment with state and district guidelines
- Ensure curriculum and instruction reflect current industry standards, practices, and emerging technologies
Career Connected Learning & Partnerships
- Develop, coordinate, and supervise work-based learning experiences (e.g., internships, job shadows, project-based partnerships, STEM competitions)
- Facilitate and collaborate with a CTE advisory committee to ensure program relevance and industry alignment
- Build and maintain partnerships with local businesses, industry professionals, and postsecondary institutions in technology and STEM fields
- Support articulation and dual credit opportunities with community and technical colleges
- Communicate effectively with families and community partners to support student learning, career pathways, and program engagement
Student Leadership & Engagement
- Advise and lead a Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) such as TSA, including leadership development, competitions, and student activities
- Promote equitable access and participation by actively identifying and removing barriers and supporting students from diverse and underrepresented populations
- Foster student voice, leadership, and collaboration through authentic, real-world learning experiences
Professional Responsibilities
- Collaborate effectively with staff, administration, counselors, families, and community partners
- Participate in professional development and industry engagement to maintain current knowledge of computer science, STEM, and applied math practices
- Maintain accurate student, program, and financial records as required
- Uphold district policies, procedures, and professional standards
- Engage in reflective practice and continuous professional growth aligned to district and state evaluation criteria
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Valid Washington State CTE Teaching Certificate in Computer Science, STEM, or related field, or valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with 6,000 hours of relevant industry experience
- Washington Applied Math Council (WAMC) Applied Math Certification
- Endorsement in Career Choices and Worksite Learning (WSL)
- Candidates without certification must have qualifying industry experience and a willingness to obtain CTE certification
- Demonstrated experience or strong knowledge of computer science, STEM, and/or applied mathematics fields
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience teaching CTE courses at the secondary level
- Experience with work-based learning, STEM partnerships, or project-based learning environments
- Experience advising CTSOs (e.g., TSA)
- Commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive practices
REQUIRED SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
- Ability to design instruction that integrates computer science, STEM, and applied math concepts
- Strong collaboration, communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to analyze and use data to improve student outcomes and program quality
- Proficiency with instructional technology, coding platforms, and industry-relevant tools
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This position includes responsibility for extended learning opportunities such as student leadership activities, advisory engagement, and industry collaboration. Certain responsibilities, including CTSO advising, work-based learning coordination, and industry engagement, may require occasional travel and extend beyond the regular workday; these duties may be supported through stipends or supplemental contracts in accordance with district and collective bargaining agreements.
