West Houston Assistance Ministries (WHAM) was established in the 1980s by seven local churches to provide centralized aid for individuals in need. WHAM supports tens of thousands of Houston residents annually by addressing basic needs such as food, clothing, eviction prevention, and utility assistance, while also offering education and job training to promote long-term independence. Their programs include a large food pantry, financial aid services, employment resources, and the WHAM Resale Store, all aimed at alleviating poverty and building a stronger community. WHAM assists over 100,000 clients yearly thanks to the generosity of businesses, individuals, and volunteers who contribute resources and time.
Role Description
The Board Member will provide governance and strategic oversight, guide the organization's mission and vision, and ensure financial stability. Key responsibilities include providing expert guidance, assisting in fundraising efforts and serving as an ambassador to the broader community. The Board Member will also contribute to policy development and the evaluation of the organization’s programs and impact.
Qualifications
- Experience in governance, strategic planning, or organizational leadership
- Strong communication and collaboration skills to work with diverse stakeholders
- Financial literacy, including familiarity with budgeting and fundraising
- Passion for community service and nonprofit operations
- Flexibility to attend on-site meetings and events in West Houston, TX
- Experience in complex projects, advocacy, systems change, community development, social services, or education is a plus
