Full Range: $50,462 - $65,842 per year

Schedule:
Monday - Friday: 8:00am - 5:00pm
40 hours per week / 12 months a year

Provides technical and instructional assistance to students involved in technical or scientific disciplines that include laboratory settings designed to further their knowledge. Sets up, demonstrates, oversees, and designs, tests, or simulate situations to support learning in compliance with student lab requirements.

The Instructional Lab Technician supports instruction in classroom, scheduled classroom labs, and walk-in learning labs.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Works with students individually and in class-sized groups to enhance their learning. Provides direct assistance in the use of equipment and materials needed for instruction as well as orienting students to the laboratory. Sets up established laboratory experiences for students as required by course outline or faculty direction. 
  • Works with faculty/instructional administrator to design, construct, modify or rebuild equipment, modules, experiments that will be used in the classrooms/laboratories in a division comprised of various related but different subject areas.  
  • Provides technical assistance to students, faculty and staff. Troubleshoots and diagnoses problems with equipment; may assist in setting up laboratories.
  • Assists instructors in the classroom/laboratory concurrently with lecture or discussion. May actually perform more dangerous and/or complex procedures for students.
  • Receives study and simulation modules from faculty members, then, facilitates discussion and /or lab work with small groups of students who are participating in the exercises.
  • Administers learning simulations, tests, and quizzes to students as provided by instructors in class or lab environment. Assists instructors by administering make-up tests. 
  • Designs, constructs and/or fabricates equipment, modules, and experiments that will assist the instructor in the delivery of desired instructional outcomes.
  • Acquires, maintains, and inventories equipment, materials, and supplies such as but not limited to chemicals, reagents, fuels, apparatus, etc., and written materials required for student instructional needs.   
  • Makes repairs to equipment and learning assistance devices. Checks out and maintains control over tools, equipment, supplies, materials used by students. May be required to maintain contact with appropriate vendors.
  • Maintains records of laboratory activity, including typing forms or inputting data or otherwise retaining information regarding the acquisition, maintenance and distribution of tools, equipment, materials, supplies, and/or written materials.  
  • Maintains up-to-date documentation of hazardous or dangerous materials, substances, and chemicals.
  • Provides for the general cleanliness and security of the laboratory or shop work area.  Handles and disposes of harmful or hazardous materials according to specific instructions relating to their disposal.  Participates in providing for a safe environment for the conduct of the laboratory.   Reports maintenance problems as they occur.
  • Assists with the assignments of student workers and technical aspects of their work. Collaborates with instructors and student workers in support of the instructional goals. May maintain records for pay purposes.
  • Assists with the budgeting process through inventory management, equipment repair, equipment life projections, parts management, and disposable lab materials use. Initiates purchase requisitions for supplies, equipment, and services. 
  • Proctors exams including those from on-line, or distance learning courses.
  • Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
This position requires working knowledge of principles and properties of electrical, mechanical drive, hydraulic, pneumatic, and pump systems (electrical and mechanical systems). Requires working knowledge of safety procedures used in electrical and mechanical systems, including lock-out tag-out. Requires working knowledge of laboratory tools and equipment used in electrical and mechanical labs. Requires and in-depth knowledge of laboratory procedures, organization, equipment, tests, and simulations. Requires knowledge of instructional methods and techniques. Requires advanced knowledge of desktop and portable electrical testing equipment use in AC and DC electrical systems. Requires sufficient knowledge of computers to use common desktop and specialized applications used in education. Requires sufficient knowledge of the English language to prepare correspondence and materials suitable for classroom presentation. Requires knowledge of tutoring techniques including students’ styles of learning. Requires sufficient human relation skills to facilitate learning with groups of students, oversee student workers, and to convey technical concepts to others. Requires sensitivity to the needs of students of diverse backgrounds and abilities. Requires the ability to carry out the responsibilities of the position including deliver instruction to small groups and individual students, design and set up laboratory assignments, experiments, simulations, and tests, as well as student projects. Requires the ability to prepare instructional equipment lab components, and disposable supplies for electrical and mechanical laboratory practice. Requires the ability to operate, calibrate, and perform minor repairs to laboratory equipment and tools. Requires the ability to conduct research of educational materials, equipment, and related information for purchases, grants, and budget proposals. Requires the ability to maintain the lab and equipment in a safe and organized manner, including the handling of hazardous or dangerous materials and equipment as required for some labs. Requires the ability to instruct students in the use of equipment and programs. Requires the ability to perform routine record keeping and report writing duties. Requires the ability to organize and prioritize work and manage time effectively. Requires the ability to communicate in both formal and informal setting with students, instructors, and other interested parties. Requires the ability to coordinate the activities of work-study students.

Physical Abilities
Incumbent must be able to function effectively indoors in a classroom/laboratory environment engaged in work of primarily a moderately active nature. Requires sufficient ambulatory ability to stand for extended periods of time, lift and move medium weight materials up to 50 pounds, and move to workstations. Requires sufficient arm, hand, finger dexterity to mix chemicals and use a computer keyboard and other office equipment. Requires normal hearing and speaking skills to communicate with staff and students in one-on-one and small group settings. Requires visual acuity to read printed materials and labels and to observe students perform tests and assignments.

Minimum Qualifications

This position requires 2 years of experience in the field of industrial automation (or a closely related field) or 2 years of coursework, including laboratory experience, related to industrial automation; with the addition of completion of industry-based certifications or the ability to obtain industry-based certifications by an industry-recognized certification agency.

An associate's degree in industrial Automation or a related field is preferred.

Licenses and Certificates

Requires a valid driver’s license.

Working Conditions
Work is performed indoors where significant safety considerations exist from physical labor, handling of light and heavy weight equipment through the proper utilization of equipment, and handling of chemicals used in industrial manufacturing for cleaning, repairing, assembling, and manufacturing parts and equipment.

Conditions of Employment: Employment in this position is contingent upon successful completion of negotiations and final approval by the District’s Board of Trustees.
