We’re supporting a search for an experienced Director of Payroll to lead and optimize payroll operations within a complex, multi-entity environment.
This role is responsible for overseeing end-to-end payroll processing, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and international regulations, and driving process improvements across systems and workflows. You’ll serve as the payroll subject matter expert, partnering closely with HR, Finance, and IT to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and scalability.
This is a high-impact leadership role suited for someone who brings both strategic oversight and hands-on execution.
What You’ll Lead
Payroll Operations & Compliance
- Oversee full-cycle payroll processing across multi-state, multi-entity, and international populations
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and global payroll regulations, including tax filings and reporting (e.g., 941s, W-2s)
- Establish and maintain strong internal controls across payroll processes, including deductions, garnishments, and leave balances
- Lead payroll audits, reconciliations, and risk mitigation efforts
Systems, Process Improvement & Automation
- Drive enhancements across payroll systems and workflows, including automation and efficiency improvements
- Oversee payroll data integration across systems (Oracle HRIS, timekeeping platforms, etc.)
- Lead payroll-related system upgrades, transitions, and implementations
- Ensure accuracy and integrity of payroll data across platforms
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing payroll team
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
- Serve as a trusted advisor to internal stakeholders on payroll-related matters
Cross-Functional Partnership
- Partner with HR, Finance, IT, Benefits, and Accounting to support payroll operations and data integrity
- Collaborate on GL mapping, reporting, and system configuration
- Support audits, compliance reviews, and external reporting requirements
Complex Payroll Management
- Oversee payroll for large, distributed employee populations (3,000–5,000 )
- Manage complex scenarios, including international payroll, expatriates, and multi-country compliance
- Ensure proper handling of outsourced components such as tax and garnishments
What We’re Looking For
- 10–15 years of progressive payroll experience, including leadership responsibility
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field; payroll certification preferred
- Proven experience managing large-scale payroll operations (3,000–5,000 employees)
- Strong knowledge of federal and state payroll laws, tax regulations, and compliance requirements
- Experience within government contracting environments required
- Hands-on experience with enterprise payroll systems, including:
- Oracle Fusion Cloud (preferred)
- ADP SmartCompliance
- Timekeeping systems (e.g., Deltek Costpoint)
- Experience leading payroll system transitions or implementations
- Strong understanding of multi-country payroll and regulatory requirements
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft 365
