GENERAL DESCRIPTION

A high school assistant principal will work with the principal to develop systems to promote and sustain student and staff success through the implementation of the district's vision and innovative approaches to enhance student success. They must manage their assigned school so as to promote the educational development of each student by use of leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills. The high school assistant principal must think in a visionary, global manner and collaborate with various stakeholders to develop school leaders and enhance skills to advance school, district and state objectives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Serves as the building instructional leader to cultivate and ensure that teaching and learning are aligned to curriculum goals both at the building and district level.
  • Fosters a culture of compassion and positive mental health for students and staff.
  • Facilitates and delegates, when appropriate, the implementation of all school related activities.
  • Builds leadership capacity in staff, and facilitates positive professional growth.
  • Displays a deep understanding of special education, including data, instruction, and IEPs.
  • Understands a systems thinking approach with regard to roles, operations, and assignments.
  • Maintains regularly planned and on-going communication with parents using a variety of formats. Cooperatively works with, advises, and assists the school parent organization(s) to enable it to support the educational goals of the school.
  • Supports and facilitates professional development of staff by providing resources, activities and performance feedback.
  • Provides the leadership necessary to ensure the school as a whole, and the individual students attending the school, perform at the highest level.
  • Direct preparation of class schedules, cumulative records and attendance reports. Oversees the building level component of interviewing and recommending personnel. Implements the district's staff development program and evaluation process in the school.
  • Maintains a schedule that includes formal and informal classroom observations and walkthroughs, as means of monitoring instructional practices and priorities.
  • Designs and implements a comprehensive communication system which ensures systematic communication for all stakeholders to center everyone on key district and school priorities.
  • Models and implements a comprehensive communication process to ensure a high level of customer service.
  • Develops and evaluates educational programs to ensure conformance to state and school board standards.
  • Plans and coordinates building goals/objectives as well as the school improvement plan.
  • Assesses the building's physical needs and works cooperatively with the Director of Operations to make sure the school facility functions well to support the educational goals.
  • Maintains a safe and orderly environment in the building to support the educational goals.
  • Assists teachers, students and parents concerning students' educational and behavioral issues. Oversees and assists in the design and in the implementation of the school wide discipline and incentive system.
  • Oversees the implementation of the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS).
  • Conducts fire, tornado drills and safety drills in coordination with state law.
  • Keeps district administration informed of school activities as deemed necessary and appropriate.
  • Coordinates and oversees the assignment of all students.
  • Maintains appropriate paperwork as it pertains to budget, personnel, building usage, student assessment, teacher evaluation, facilities and Title programs as appropriate.
  • Coordinates district and agency services and business partnerships that enhance academic and social development as appropriate.
  • Maintains up to date knowledge of technology utilized by the district.
  • Maintains supervision at assigned after school activities and events.
  • Oversees and evaluates campus coordinators.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervises employees.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the district's policies and negotiated agreements.  Responsibilities include interviewing, recommending individuals to be hired, training and teaching employees, planning, assigning and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid certificate/ license as issued by the Ohio Department of Education; Certificate, Licenses and/or registrations as applicable to position duties and responsibilities and/or as required by the Board of Education.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues and administration. Ability to read, analyze and interpret testing and survey results, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students, parents, agencies, teachers or members of the school community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conforms to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to administration, staff, public groups, and/or Board of Education.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory based on school objectives.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community.  Ability to speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication.  Ability to use computers where applicable.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of district requirements and Board of Education policies.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 75 pounds if required to move an injured student or employee.
