The ideal candidate must have skilled work in painting a variety of wood, masonry, metal, and other surfaces. The work involves the preparation of finished or unfinished surfaces and the color matching of paints in accordance with standard practices of the painting trade. The ideal candidate must be professional, punctual, have an eye for detail and can follow oral and written instructions while working with little supervision.
Responsibilities include:
- Apply water-based or oil-based paints, stains, varnishes, and other coloring materials to a variety of interior and exterior wood, masonry, metal, and other surfaces using brushes, rollers, and spray guns
- Prepare surfaces to be painted by stripping paint and sanding surfaces using heat guns, sandpaper, sandblasters, scrapers, chemical paint solvents, or vacuum-type sanders
- Performs minor repairs to surfaces to be painted using spackle, plaster, or other appropriate materials
- Assemble and disassemble scaffolding; hauls and erects ladders; cleans brushes, rollers, spray guns, and work areas; and makes minor repairs to equipment
- Remove the glazing compound, replace broken glass, and re-glaze windowpanes
- Caulk window frames, door frames, and other areas
- Apply wallpaper or vinyl covering
- Function as a lead worker over helpers and other maintenance staff by assigning work, providing on-the-job training and assistance, and reviewing projects for adherence to specifications and standards
- The ability to work from scissor lifts, bucket trucks and man lifts both interior and exterior. As well as working at heights from scaffolding and ladders
- The ability to mix paints and match and blend colors and finishes with surrounding surfaces
- The ability to lift and move objects weighing fifty pounds or less
- Other duties as assigned
As a member of the Facilities Divisional staff, this position is deemed essential. Essential employees must remain or report to work during partial or full day closings of the University due to hazardous road conditions, emergency circumstances or for other reasons.
- Successful completion of the Building Trades Trainee program (commonwealth title);
OR
- Three years of experience in the painting trade;
OR
- An equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Valid driver license
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the methods, materials, hazards, safety precautions, and practices of the painting trade.
- Knowledge of the care and use of tools is essential to the painting trade.
- Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.
- Ability to measure and calculate square footage for estimating necessary materials.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Completion of Trade School
- Experience of 3 years for a painting contractor
