Organizational Context
The West Central Texas Council of Governments (WCTCOG) is a regional planning organization serving a 19-county rural area headquartered in Abilene, Texas. WCTCOG serves as the host agency for the Big Country Area Health Education Center (AHEC), the regional division of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center West Texas AHEC.
The Big Country AHEC advances four core program goals: introducing youth (K–12) to health careers; supporting rural clinical training for health professions students; providing practice support to existing health care professionals; and promoting healthy living in rural communities. The Coordinator also supports WCTCOG’s broader human services mission, addressing the health, safety, and general welfare needs of citizens across the region
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Program Planning & Coordination
• Plan, implement, and evaluate AHEC program activities within the annual Scope of Work and all Center Director directives
• Manage project timelines, deliverables, and program milestones across multiple concurrent initiatives
• Maintain current knowledge of regulations, programs, and resources applicable to health education programming
• Prepare and distribute informational materials related to all health education programming
Health Careers & Student Programs
• Oversee the AHEC Scholars Program, including recruitment, enrollment, student tracking, and program completion requirements
• Coordinate K–12 health career exploration activities, including school presentations, career days, and pipeline programming
• Develop and maintain relationships with local schools, colleges, and universities to support student engagement
Clinical Training Coordination
• Work with health care providers and health professions students to coordinate rural clinical rotation placement sites
• Facilitate interdisciplinary training opportunities by connecting students across health professions programs
• Maintain placement records and communicate logistics to all stakeholders including preceptors, students, and academic institutions
Continuing Education
• Develop or partner with health care providers and agencies to offer continuing education opportunities, including conferences, symposiums, and lunch-and-learn events
• Coordinate logistics, speakers, CE credit processing, and post-event evaluation for all educational programming
• Identify continuing education needs of rural health care professionals and connect those needs to programming opportunities
Data Management & Reporting
• Ensure timely and accurate entry and reporting of all required program data in designated tracking systems
• Compile program statistics and outcomes data to support quarterly and annual reporting requirements
• Assist in the preparation of grant reports, performance data narratives, and compliance documentation
Community & Stakeholder Engagement
• Cultivate and maintain partnerships with health care providers, rural hospitals, community organizations, and regional stakeholders
• Representing the Big Country AHEC at community events, health fairs, partner meetings, and regional convenings
• Support WCTCOG community initiatives addressing the health, safety, and general welfare of citizens in the service region
• Performs related work as assigned
Qualifications
Education & Experience
• Bachelor’s degree preferred; field of study in public health, health administration, education, social work, or a related discipline preferred
• Minimum of two (2) years of experience in program coordination, project management, health education, or a related field
• Experience working with health care professionals, academic institutions, or community-based organizations preferred
• Experience in rural or underserved community settings is a plus
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities, and meet deadlines
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including ability to present to diverse audiences
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
• Ability to collect, track, and accurately report program data
• Strong interpersonal skills with ability to build effective working relationships with health care providers, educators, students, and community partners
• Self-directed and able to work with general supervision in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment
• Knowledge of or willingness to learn continuing education accreditation and coordination processes
Working Conditions
This position requires regular travel throughout the service region, with occasional overnight travel. A valid Texas Driver’s License is required. The position is primarily office-based when not traveling.
