Accounting Specialist — Job Description
Overview
This is a temporary project, on-site role located in Los Angeles, CA. The Accounting Specialist will support the Director of Finance to help revamp the system. This role provides critical support to the accounting team, maintains strong internal controls, and ensures compliance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements. Experience with Shelby Financials, Ministry Brands Systems is essential, as this position plays a key role in managing financial workflows within the Shelby platform.
Role Description
Responsibilities include managing and maintaining the Shelby financial system, performing system integration and testing, and overseeing data management and software updates. The position requires collaboration with cross-functional teams, overseeing financial projects, and ensuring seamless functionality of the system to support the church's mission and operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Financial Reporting & Analysis:
Prepare financial statements, analyze reports, and identify trends; support budgeting and forecasting.
- Month-End Close:
Manage journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and general ledger maintenance for timely closing.
- Compliance & Controls:
Ensure adherence to internal controls, GAAP, and assist with external audits and tax filings.
- Operations:
Oversee accounts payable/receivable, payroll processing, and cash flow management.
- Leadership & Process Improvement:
Mentor junior accountants, develop new accounting procedures, and implement financial software.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience, including supervisory responsibilities.
- Hands‑on experience with Shelby Financial Systems (Ministry Brands ie. ShelbyNext, Shelby v5, or Arena).
- Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles (if applicable).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and general accounting software.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in nonprofit, faith‑based, or membership‑driven organizations.
- Knowledge of fund accounting and donor‑restricted funds.
- Experience improving accounting processes and implementing system enhancements.
