What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Camp Program (Activity) Staff position at Wesley Camp & Retreat Center?
Timeline:
Staff report May 13 and are finished July 10 (some staff may have the opportunity to work through July 17, pending need and mutual agreement). Staff are required to live onsite and will receive at least 1.5 days off per week.
Position Purpose:
Program staff serve to further the mission of the camp through the development and delivery of activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ ages and abilities. Assist in the management of the physical operation of the program related equipment. Live out and share the mission and promise of Wesley Camp & Retreat Center.
Reports to:
This position is accountable to the Camp Director and directly reports directly to the Program Director.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Develop and deliver programs that are appropriate for the age and ability of the campers.
- Connect program activities to faith and general life-lessons in a way relatable to campers
- Offer differentiated tasks as needed for varying abilities.
- Properly prepare for leading and assisting with activities and worship as assigned.
- Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement and empowerment of youth.
- Facilitate interpersonal relationships among campers, as needed, to ensure inclusion.
- Motivate and encourage campers to try tasks while offering constructive and encouraging feedback.
2. Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures.
- Assist in training staff as needed.
- Assure campers are properly supervised at all times during programming activities.
- Ensure campers are properly equipped and wearing appropriate clothing prior to beginning program activities.
- Ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures, appropriately redirect, or reinstruct, when necessary.
3. Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment for programming activities.
- Help maintain the program equipment including archery, boats, craft supplies, yard games, life jackets, challenge course, and other necessary equipment and supplies.
- Ensure programming equipment and supplies are properly stored and secured.
- Conduct daily checks of area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
- Notify program director when supplies become damaged, unsafe, or missing.
4. Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
- Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
- Actively participate in all aspects of camp life.
- Appropriately represent the camp and its mission and values both at camp and on days off.
- Set a good example to campers and others in regard to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
Other Job Duties:
- Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities.
- Assist in the planning of any special events.
- Acquire additional certifications or training, as requested.
- Attend staff training and meetings as requested.
- Appropriately utilize off duty time to observe self-care.
- Live out and share the mission and promise of Wesley Camp & Retreat Center, including on days off.
Qualifications:
- As a faith-based organization, we seek team members who either share our faith commitments or are open to exploring them as a part of our community life.
- Must be 18 years of age or high school graduate.
- Must be able to obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPR.
- Must submit health history record and examination form prior to first day of work.
- Ability to interact with all age levels.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Understand the development needs of youth.
- Ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner.
- Demonstrate knowledge and skill in designated camp program areas.
- Work as a team with other staff members.
Physical Aspects of the Job:
- Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
- Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.

- Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
- Ability to walk moderate distances and live outdoors.
- Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
