What are the responsibilities and job description for the Project Manager - Heavy Civil Construction position at Wendler Inc.?
Wendler Inc. is looking for an experienced Heavy Civil Construction Project Manager to lead complex infrastructure projects throughout Iowa and the Midwest.
We're looking for someone who understands heavy civil construction, can lead a project from handoff through closeout, knows their numbers, understands what is happening in the field, anticipates problems, and takes ownership of the outcome.
Our work includes water and wastewater treatment facilities, pump stations, underground utilities, deep foundations and excavation, structural concrete, process piping, flood-control infrastructure, equipment installation, high-voltage electrical systems, and other technically complex civil construction.
If you’ve successfully managed complex civil construction projects and are ready for greater ownership, visibility, and opportunity to grow with a company that is building for the future, we want to talk with you.
Responsibilities
- Lead heavy civil construction projects from handoff through final completion and closeout.
- Own project financial performance, including budgets, cost forecasting, cost-to-complete projections, billing, commitments, change management, and profitability.
- Develop, maintain, and drive project schedules, identifying critical-path activities and potential delays before they impact the project.
- Review contracts, drawings, specifications, scopes, and project requirements to identify obligations, risks, conflicts, and opportunities.
- Partner closely with Superintendents and field leadership to connect project planning with field execution.
- Lead procurement planning and coordinate subcontractors, vendors, materials, and equipment to support the project schedule.
- Manage RFIs, submittals, changes, project documentation, and contractual requirements.
- Anticipate cost, schedule, scope, constructability, and procurement issues and drive solutions before they become project problems.
- Lead owner, engineer, subcontractor, and internal project meetings with clear communication and follow-through.
- Build strong working relationships with owners, engineers, subcontractors, suppliers, field teams, and internal leadership.
- Provide leadership and direction to Assistant Project Managers and other project team members.
- Maintain a strong field presence and understand what is happening on your projects, not just what is reflected in the project-management system.
- Ensure project decisions support Wendler’s expectations for safety, quality, schedule, financial performance, and client relationships.
The strongest candidates will bring:
- 5 years of progressively responsible Project Management experience in heavy civil or infrastructure construction.
- Direct experience managing projects involving one or more of the following: water/wastewater treatment, pump stations, underground utilities, structural concrete, deep excavation/foundations, process piping, flood-control infrastructure, or comparable complex civil construction.
- Proven responsibility for project financials, including budgeting, forecasting, cost-to-complete, billing, change management, and profitability.
- Strong knowledge of construction scheduling, sequencing, procurement, contracts, and field operations.
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, contracts, and scopes of work.
- Experience identifying and resolving project risks before they negatively impact cost or schedule.
- Strong understanding of the relationship between Project Management and field execution.
- The ability to manage multiple priorities and make sound decisions in a fast-moving construction environment.
- Strong communication skills and the professional presence to work effectively with field employees, executives, owners, engineers, subcontractors, and suppliers.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and follow-through.
- Experience with Procore, Microsoft Office, and construction scheduling software.
- Construction Management, Construction Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related degree preferred; equivalent heavy civil construction experience will be considered.
- CMAR and/or EPC project experience is a plus.
At Wendler, you won't be another Project Manager buried inside a massive organization. You'll have the opportunity to take meaningful ownership, work directly with experienced field and executive leadership, and make an impact on both your projects and the future of the company.
